"Strange times have come, bringing stranger creatures with them."

Millennia ago, the ancient one was a Sentinel of the highest order. She served as one of the Icewarden’s personal guards for dozens of years despite her hybrid magic - something that in most dragons hindered them from even reaching the rank of Overseer, let alone becoming a Sentinel. But she was loyal to her deity, and loyal to the gaolers, and her loyalty was rewarded with a respected position. The ancient one worked hard, and never failed when her services were needed. When the time came that she began to feel weary with age, she was given permission to retire from a life of battling and follow other pursuits. And she did, gladly, becoming a keeper of ancient knowledge that earned her even more respect from the other gaolers. Of course, age took its toll on her as it did all dragons. Every few years, the ancient one would retire to a private cave and hibernate, restoring her magic and her strength as she rested. After some time she would awaken and return to her life, dispensing what she knew to the younger gaolers who had hatched or been promoted in her absence. Until the time came that she did not. She knows not what magic put her to sleep for so long. It had to be a formidable source of power, certainly, to keep her slumbering. She had no enemies, save for prisoners she might have captured once upon a time - but most of those prisoners were long dead, or not nearly strong enough to wield such power. Whatever it may have been matters little, for the magic has worn off now. Little by little, year by year, she began to return to wakefulness - first came the return of dreams, which she did not have in her deepest sleep, and then a faint awareness of herself, and then she felt the chilled stone walls that surrounded her. And then, finally, the shards of crystal that had grown through her, into her, embedded themselves into her body and fed off of her magic. When she awoke, the ancient one had to dig her way out of the rock she had rested within. Claws torn and bleeding, antlers chipped and broken, she emerged into a world that was unlike anything she had once known. Strange dragons had populated the land in her absence. Their language was different, their forms even more so, and they looked at her without any recognition. Fear, certainly, but not of who she was - only what she was. And there was corruption across the world, too, not just by the Shade but by other sources. Yet the ancient one had nowhere to imprison those afflicted by such poison, and no one to help her capture them. For the first time, Hiraeth is alone in the world, with no one to guide, and no one to guide her. |
