Their colony has been living alongside fellow beastfolk and dragonkind alike for as long as Urian remembered.

They had been claimed by a dragoness as her charge, some time ago. She and her mate followed them, settled with a dragon clan nearby to maintain her vigil--so bound to them was she that young maren of the colony would cease their fretting at the sight of her mottled black hide in the water.

In solidarity Urian's mother, their matriarch, sought out an alliance with the dragoness' clan. She had swum high enough to breach the surface, and the dragon leaders had in turn dove down as close to their tunnels and spires as their non-aquatic forms could bear. Something about honor and faith in one another, his mother had said. A reminder that we are with them, as they are with us.

Urian didn't think much of this back then, content to simply belong in his mother's arms. There were so many things to learn about--magic and alchemy and music--that stories about dragons and alliances seemed so far away.

Then his mother passed, and the young prince recalled this promise.

He had almost forgotten their bond, the day their guardian dragoness dove down again. She comforted him, peered at him with her massive blue eyes, and Urian realized why they loved her dearly. His hands ran over unfading talon scars on black hide and remembered his mother's words.

Honor and faith, he promised the dragoness. We are with you.
