Blackhawk stood in front of what most dragons would consider a crime.
He hadn’t been there when the decision was made to bring in this... child. That was the only word he could use to describe it. The mirror in front of him was barely more than a hatchling, its tiny body lanky with the mismatched sizes of youth. He could hear it mewling behind the glass, trying desperately to hoist itself up under the weight of the massive golden orb fused into its flesh.
“How’s A1PODA?” came a question from behind him. He turned to see one of his coworkers, a wildclaw adjusting her glasses up her snout.
How was A1PODA? It was hard to say. From a scientific standpoint, he could say that it was growing remarkably well, that the implementation of the orb and the introduction of the synthetic flesh was as of yet, successful. It was early yet, but things looked rosy- from the standpoint of a dragon doing his job.
But there was another point, another side. When Blackhawk- the dragon, the person- looked at the mirror behind the glass, he saw a child who was in pain. He saw a hatchling that had been ripped from its family, experimented on against its will. He saw something that hurt, for no reason at all other than it had been chosen.
He remembered what the scouts had said when they arrived, paws full of a mirror barely out of the egg. They had joked about how the mother had looked when she realized her child- her only child- was gone, chosen by forces outside her control to be used for things that should have never been attempted.
Blackhawk the scientist saw a miracle that was growing into something that could be world-changing.
But Blackhawk the dragon saw a baby who they had hurt.
“They’re doing fine,” he said, as he turned tail and followed her out of the room.
Distantly, he could hear A1PODA screaming.
O storms on the horizon, o battlefields bare; what did we leave behind when we burnt the summer fields? As we sailed singing from the mountains crowned in coral and gold, what mirrored there in the deep water? Where are the hallowed halls? When do they sleep? The maps are all bare; no bread may satisfy, no pure water quench. When we regain those lost, when we find the books of our ancestors, what will they say when they behold the rusted blades?
