He arrives at the end of days. He is not the reaper found in storybooks, slithering through open windows on dark nights where the wind carries the smell of myrrh and soft musings of tomorrow. Instead, he greets them around late afternoon in the hours when the sun is a crisp amber glow. He knocks quietly on their doors and waits a few moments before letting himself in.

Ozymandias used to be surprised at how well his travellers seemed to anticipate his arrival. He’s lost count of the number of those who are there at the door before he’s finished a third knock. Some of them are holding the hand of a loved one or clutching a suitcase. Over time, he’s come to expect their hasty reception. He still knocks and announces his presence before trying the handle-- he finds it to be less unsettling than barging in.

He can count the number on both hands those who have met him with begging and fright. The silvery wildclaw standing in front of his daughter with teeth bared and tail thrashing wildly. The ridgeback who fled her home in a frenzy, shattering the windows in her haste. And the hauty bogsneak who tempted Ozymandias with riches and gold if only he’d leave him for another day.

Thankfully, the majority of his clients are less enthusiastic.
