"Quote"

The brothers were born to a sect that worshiped a dead chaos god. Their childhood was one of isolation and prayer in crumbling temples, under shattered mosaics at the chipped feet of godly statues that no longer whispered to those who dreamt about the end of the world. By the time they were grown, their hands were stained the red of blood.

Twins were held in high-regard by the religion for their connection of chaos and it was expected of Haren and Hawen to become priests to the god, to lead their people along the dark path that was ever watched by the chaos god. The twins took to their roles easily; their blades cutting swiftly through sacrifices, their flesh pierced by ink or metal in shows of dedication and finally upon the completion of their final test their voices were also sealed away so that they would only ever speak for the pleasure of their god. They emerged War Priests, judges and juries to any who would speak out against the god.

No one expected much from Egren. He was small as a child, sickly and not expected to live past his first year. When he didn’t die, there was simply shrugs as their people turned away. He was too weak to amount to anything and so was useless in the eyes of his parents and community. It was Haren and Hawen that kept their brother alive in those early years and no matter how hard it got, they ensured that he was cared for and as comfortable as their way of life could allow. Perhaps this was the catalyst for all that came after, or perhaps it was meant to happen long before any of them had been born.

While his brothers were off on their priestly trials, Egren explored the deep forgotten places of the chaos god’s temples. Over the years he found many trinkets and scrolls, bits of information that had been lost to time and one day, on the eve of his brother’ ascension, Egren found a hidden room.

Inside was a statue, pristine even after millennia being locked away, the rubies of its eyes catching the torchlight the young man carried. Around its neck, a simple golden necklace.

Even years later, Egren would not be able to say what compelled him to take the golden pendent from the statue’s shoulders with reverence and place it around his own neck. Perhaps it was destiny, perhaps it was his god moving in the shadows longer than memory could imagine. No matter the case, after the pendant settled against his belly his mind instantly filled with images, flashes of knowledge flew back as swiftly as a raging river, slipping through his fingers and leaving only vague impressions behind until it all became too much and he lost consciousness.

When Egren next woke, his brothers were looking down at him, kneeling by his side. As soon as the thought entered his head of how they could have found him, he knew. He was now the Speaker of the chaos god, who was slowly waking from his millennia slumber deep beneath the earth. With his own ascension his mind had called to his brothers and they had come, for a war priests’ true calling and ritual silence was at the heel of the Speaker whose voice was all that was needed to lead the people.

Haren and Hawen helped Egren to his feet and with a jolt, he realised that he was now taller than his brothers, his shoulders broader and his body stronger. A chuckle started low in his throat before it bubbled out into a full-blown laugh as he pulled his brothers close and out of his sight, he didn’t notice their own small smiles grace their silent lips as they clung back just as tightly to him.

None of them knew what was coming but they did know that the wheels had been set in motion and could no longer be stopped for better or worse.

“Let’s get started.” Egren laughed as he made his way back into the tunnels of the temple his brothers nodding and falling into place behind him.
