S T O R Y

Aya was the sort of dragon that somehow held an innocent wonder about absolutely everything in the world, no matter how old she became. As soon as she had hatched from her egg, she had squeaked at her adoptive parents and had eagerly wiggled over to them, taking in the lush world with her wide green eyes, filled with excitement and joy.

Her parents knew that she was special the moment that they laid eyes on her. The flowers seemed to perk up at her touch as she stumbled about on her newborn legs, the little critters seeming to hold no fear of the hatchling that was beginning to explore her world, and the leaves and petals of neighboring trees seemed to gently caress her in a loving breeze. It seemed that Nature had chosen her to be one of the few who received its powers of creation and growth. Blessed with this honor, they made a promise to the Gladekeeper that they would allow their daughter to grow in the ways of the nomads, and grow with a love and appreciation for all that life had to offer. It seemed that the Gladekeeper was content with this, as a gentle, warm breeze enveloped the family, flower petals seeming to gently kiss their scales, as the proud parents beamed at each other while their daughter tried to catch one of the pink petals!

There was never a dull day in Aya’s life?coming from a nomadic tribe nestled within the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth, every day was an adventure, with new sights to see, new friends to make, and new areas to explore! No matter where they wandered, Aya saw the absolute beauty and grace of everything around her. When the time came for her to leave her family unit and find her own place, she was more than ready to do so, filled with the insatiable yearning for knowledge of the lands beyond the small area of the Labyrinth she grew up in. She held no fear in leaving, for it was a location that she always knew that she could ultimately return home to, no matter what.

Moving foreward

With vigor, the young Aya began her journey through the Labyrinth. In her wake, she left behind small, violet flowers wherever her feet touched the ground, her joy causing her to unconsciously make lovely flowers bloom wherever she stepped. She stopped for a moment to take in the beauty, breathing deeply as she marveled in the world around her.

Somewhere above her head, amongst the trees, a lonely bird sang a love song to find a mate, while other birds twittered, maybe gossiping about the bird’s song. The air had a crisp freshness to it, and the grass was covered in a slight layer of dew, the forest showing the signs of flourishing life after a recent rainfall. Small fragments of sunlight filtered through the leafy canopy above, speckling the dark forest floor with small patches of gold. Glowing pocket mice scurried up the trunks of trees, squeaking and snuggling up together.

However, all of a sudden, the squeaks became more urgent. One little mouse was still stuck at the base of the tree, anxiously squeaking and chittering, while the family that had made it up the tree began to squeak frantically, as well. Confused, Aya turned to see what had made them so frantic, to see why the tiny mouse was so frantically trying to scrabble up the tree.

Her eyes widened as she caught sight of a Strangler slowly slithering towards them, its leafy tongue flickering in and out as it began to advance towards the helpless little mouse which it planned to make its prey. Gasping, she quickly ran over to the pocket mouse and scooped it up, gently holding the little thing in her claws, holding it at a safe height from the strangler. She could hear the family squeaking increase even more, probably thinking that SHE would eat the poor thing, instead, as the little mouse trembled in fear in her grasp.

However, she gave the small mouse a gentle smile. “Don’t worry, little one. You’re safe now,” she said softly, reaching up to place it in the tree to join its family. It jumped out of her hands and instantly curled up with its family members, all of them chirping softly, one of them grooming the tiny baby that she had just saved. The rest of them looked at her and softly chirruped at her, seeming to thank her.

With a final smile and a nod, she lowered herself from the tree’s high perch, continuing on her way. As she passed the Strangler, it let out an angry hiss, frustrated that its meal had been taken from it, but she paid it no mind, continuing to explore the wonders of the Viridian Labyrinth.

Eventually, she came upon a lovely patch of flowers, all which bloomed brightly as they curled along the trunk of an ancient tree. Splotches of pastel yellows, blues, pinks, and whites encircled the tree trunk, and Aya found herself gaping in awe at the gorgeous sight, looking up to see the green leaves of the tree speckled with numerous colorful flower buds that matched those of the ancient vine surrounding it. As she looked down at the base of the tree, she noticed something was off. A single, lonely flower was trying to bloom, but it seemed that it was having trouble. The color was dull, the leaves brittle and brown, the stem weak and the petals beginning to wrinkle.

Even though it was trying its best to grow, it was dying. Aya felt pity for the poor, beautiful plant, which seemed different than the other flowers that flourished within the great tree. Maybe it just needed a little help?

Lowering her muzzle towards the petals of the flower, she gently touched it with her beak, closing her eyes. “I know you can grow,” she said in gentle encouragement to the plant. Concentrating her magical energy, she kept her four feet solidly planted in the ground. The grass around her claws began to cause tiny, colorful flowers to bloom, but she was focusing on one thing--the dying flower that was struggling to live.

Slowly but surely, the little plant began to perk up. Starting from its roots, it slowly began to turn into a healthy shade of bright green, traveling up the stem, the leaves growing back as color slowly returned to its petals, as well. The dull brownish-grey of the petals slowly blossomed into a shimmer of bright cyan and magenta, the petals eagerly wishing to soak in the moonlight’s soft glow.

Aya smiled as she watched the flower enter its full bloom. “There you go! You just needed a little extra help is all,” she said happily. The flower seemed to have a lustrous, pearly sheen under the pale light of the moon, enthralling her with its beauty.

“It’s thanking you for the help.”

Startled at the unknown voice that disturbed the tranquility of the forest, Aya quickly turned around, eyes wide with surprise and heart beginning to race. In front of her now was a male Guardian, with lemongrass wings and a Snow White underbelly. He was smiling at her, his eyes shining with kindness. Her instincts told her that he was not a threat, and she allowed her guard to lower slightly.

“You’re a nature druid, too?” the stranger continued, coming closer to her and lowering his head. “My name is Karrin. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

She gave a small smile in return. She just…felt like she could trust him. She could feel his own latent magical energy through her own. He was one of her kind, she knew.

And she had to admit, he was quite handsome and charming, as well. That fact may or may not have affected her willingness to trust him…

“I’m Aya,” she responded gently. “It’s nice to meet you, too.”

Here and Now

It is said that home is where the heart is. If that saying is true, then Aya had certainly found her home?for Karrin held her heart, and as long as they were together, she was content. Home was wherever she and Karrin decided to travel, wherever their souls directed them to go.

It was a night like any other night. She and Karrin had ceased travelling due to the darkness of the night, the moon being covered up by clouds, and had taken shelter underneath a tree canopy. Curled up under Karrin’s feathered wing, snuggled close to his body, Aya slept soundly, dreaming about her and Karrin frolicking together in a meadow with a hatchling that they would hopefully have in the future.

That was, until her pleasant dream began to go astray.

In the dream, her sweet little hatchling began to wander away, dangerously close to crossing over the border of the verdant Viridian Labyrinth, into the red, festering lands of the Scarred Wasteland. Her little one curiously began to approach the very edges of the Wandering Contagion, which pulsated and oozed as it tried to take over the greenery of the forest. Crying out to save her child as Karrin mysteriously faded away, Aya ran forward, eyes only for her little hatchling. But before she could stop him, he disappeared into the tendrils and membranes that hungrily yearned to consume all life.

“No!” she cried out, running towards the pestilence. Weaving through the very-much-alive tendons and thorns that tried to crush her, to suck out her life, she pushed her way through, desperate to have her hatchling back.

Breaking through the border, her nostrils filled with the stench of death, rot, and bile?so different from the fresh, crisp, flowery smells of the green wilds that she called home. But much to her surprise, instead of finding her little one dead, he was instead happily playing with the skull of a dragon at the feet of a female Skydancer, clad in the apparel of a Sage. A fierce, motherly protectiveness overcame Aya, as she approached this other female, fully prepared to take her baby back.

“Be at peace, witch of Nature,” the stranger said, her voice sounding like a soothing melody. “I will bring no harm to your little one. This simply confirmed to me the lengths you will go to save the one you love.”

“What?” Aya demanded to know, still on her guard.

The baby chirped happily, landing both of his front claws down on the skull, breaking it. He let out a delighted squeal, promptly beginning to play with another skull. The mysterious Skydancer wore a smile on her face as she once again spoke.

“You are dreaming right now, Aya. Yes, I know your name,” she said, before Aya could express her shock at how this mysterious figure knew who she was. “I am Bianca, and I come with a warning.”

“Warning? What do you mean by that?” the Nature witch wanted to know, allowing herself to relax the slightest bit when she saw that this mysterious new dragon seemed to want nothing to do with harming her or her baby.

“You have incredible power, Aya. But if it is not controlled, you can destroy the things that you hold most dear,” Bianca continued, her tone serious, yet gentle, allowing one of her wings to fall and gently protect the hatchling from the harsher elements. “But I am here to help. Come to my clan, nestled in the Rotrock Rim. There, you will be safe, and can learn how to properly utilize your powers and control them.”

“…Why are you telling me this? Am I really that dangerous?” Aya asked in a soft voice, her green eyes looking over at her hatchling sadly. Did she have the potential to bring misery to those she loved…? Could she be a danger to her future little ones?

“You are not the only one with your strong elemental magic,” Bianca responded. “As you know, your mate, Karrin, is also a Nature witch. There are, in fact, witches of all elements. But if these powers are not controlled, great sadness and devastation can occur. As a precaution, let us all form a coven, live together, and learn how to use our powers in harmony with one another, so that we can make a difference in Sornieth, and that it may be a good one.”

Aya was silent, pondering this information that she had just been told. “Will we...really help others?” se asked quietly. “I…I like the sound of that…”

Bianca smiled, slowly standing up on her hind legs and spreading her wings wide. Aya’s surroundings began to fade away into darkness, and she realized that Bianca was probably causing her to wake up. “Then come meet me in the Scarred Wasteland. Come to my clan, learn the true potential of your powers, and flourish.”

With those final words, Aya awoke with a start, her green eyes flashing open. The first thing that she did was turn to look at Karrin, who was already awake, looking down at her with an intensity in his eyes.

Before she could even ask him any question, he spoke. “Love, did you just have the craziest dream, involving a Skydancer named Bianca?”

Aya nodded vigorously. “She said…that we aren’t the only ones with our powers…and said to come to her clan in the Rotrock Rim. That we would learn the full extent of our powers…and that we would flourish.”

“She said the same thing to me,” Karrin whispered, leaning down to nuzzle Aya with his nose, his wing once more draping over her like a blanket. She loved it when he did that. “I suppose we know our plans for tomorrow, right?”

Yawning, Aya gave another nod. She was still very sleepy…that dream had seemed to have taken a lot of energy out of her. “Yeah…when we wake up…let’s go to the Scarred Wasteland…it’ll be an adventure!”

“It most certainly will,” her mate responded gently, pulling her close to him. She smiled, nuzzling into his warmth, whispering a goodnight to him that was gently returned by his soothing voice.

And with that, she fell asleep once more, eagerly awaiting the adventure that would come tomorrow morning.
