At first, it's loneliness. He lacks magical talent, lacks the bedrock that sits in his mother and sister's souls, and he feels the absence. It's not fair, even as his father begins to teach him the sword instead. He feels othered and alone, preferring to be left to fend for himself when they go to find someone to take from. It's when he begins to wonder what to do that his uncle pulls him aside, unsheathes a glistening sword from his side, and hands it to him. Fight, he says. Show me what you can do, he says. Raja obliges out of duty, not love, but suddenly every day is consumed by that. Catching onto his loneliness, Horakhty trains him relentlessly, until it is second nature. Before he realises, he is no longer alone, he grins and claps his uncle on the back and smiles. After that he joins his family, and the crowds come to him. He is gorgeous, his mother's ethereal features on his young face, his words are unthinkingly complimentary and he smiles all the time. He comes home with roses layering over his back, he comes home with gifts and he is challenged by the knights in the towns they pass through. He accepts, and he wins. And when he wins, he smiles harder, laughs in delight. This is his element. He is not lonely. He follows his sisters like a guard at their backs, he talks to the noble houses they come to, and eventually, he realises something. He can't keep doing this. They have to keep a low profile, have to keep moving, and he doesn't want to do one of those things. He loves to travel, yes, but moving everywhere without an impact, like a ghost? He can't do that forever. He is older now, happier, and he is thankful for his childhood but he must go. The sword waits for no man, does it not? He buys his own sword now, smiles nods as it straps it to his hip. It is the morning, and he walks away whistling a tune of hope.
