Biography
She learned that the fire burnt when she was young.

The icefields were no place for warmth, the bitter chill all that there was, and will ever be. Enternal, just as its inhabitants were enternal.

Two dragons claimed that harsh environment a home.

They were very, very much alone in the white world of ice, but they were content. They had each their daily tasks, to take care of themselves and their children. And once their chuldren were old enough, they would return to their clans. For now, however, it was customary to let these children grow up without outside influences.

They could not watch over their children daily, however, and it fell onto the older to take care of the younger, most of the time. Perhaps that was how her fate was sealed.

They were only children, who could blame either of them?

A flame warmed their burrow in the snow, for pearlcatchers were not as suited to the cold weather compared to breeds with more fur. They were told to keep away, for the flame burnt.

Children were not great at followig instructions.

•••

The dying embers were always a fascination to Jade, as they danced around the otherwise cold lair. Sometimes she would play and catch them, watching them as they rapidly burned away to nothing. Sometimes her brother would join in, but mostly, he watched, and told her to keep away from the flames. She could not suppress her fascination with the flickering fire, however.

And that would be her downfall.

She could not, would not, follow her brother's orders. With each leap, she snuck closer to the flame. Sometimes her brother noticed. More often, he didn't.

When she was close enough to touch it, she did.

Only for a moment. The flames burnt.

Her carelessness was what caused her world to burst into fire.

Or perhaps it was fate. Why else would her parents have placed the hoarded winter food right next to the fireplace?

When the fire sprang up hungrily, her first thought was how her parents were going to punish her and her brother when they found out. Not her safety.

But nevertheless, she had never wanted something so hard.

If only she could go back in time, so that she could have made a different choice, so that it could have never happened.

Well, wish granted.

The flames died before her eyes, whether truly controlled by her, or just because it had run out of fuel. Belief, however, was enough to fuel everything.

Her fascination with fire only grew stronger.

•••

They did not get into much trouble, in the end. Her mother merely decided that it was best for them to be introduced to the main clan earlier than usual, in order fro someone to properly take care of them. She was only glad that they were safe, rather than angry as Jade had thought she was.

They were initated into the clan two moons afterwards. To say she was pleased would be an overstatement. She had very little contact with dragons before, and did not se why she needed them now.

She was deemed worthy to be the shaman's apprentice. Not that she was a good student, but a pearlcatcher's innate magic manifested itself strongly within her. The fact she was antisocial was not as much of a problem was her unneeving fascination with the flame. In an ice clan, the warmth was unncessary.

And in the end, that was what drove her out.
•••
They grew more wary of her as the days grew shorter, but she did not mind. She could not care less about the opinions of others. She was disdainful of them. What did they know about the Flame?

She nearly met her death because of this. She still cannot decided whether the alternative was better.

She was chosen to go on a hunt, and she agreed. Perhaps that was her first mistake.

She certainly thought so when the beast was at her neck, and no one came forward to save her. She struggled, but was helpless. She was not know for her strength. The others watched on helplessly.

And so she burst into flames.

A great shout rang from the watching crowd. What was that? The beast snarled, burnt, and ran away.

And she reappeared in another burst of flames, this time away from the beast.

Only she knew the secrets. She who controlled the flame became fire. And where one flame died, a thousand sprung up, at a thousand other places.

But they saw evil. Sorcery, and not the shamanism they practiced. They whispered about it amongst themselves, and finally went home without waiting for her, her, whose flames had taken much out of her.

When she arrived home, she was greeted with the sight of blades.

Go back to where you belong, monster.

She was about to retort, to fight back, until she saw a glimpse of what was hidden in their eyes.

They were not angered, they were afraid. Afraid that the flame would comsume them, and unlike her, they would not spring up once more. Afraid of her.

They didn't understand her, just as she did not understand them.

She left them alone. She was afraid too. She did not want to become a monster.
•••
She did not understand how much she needed company until she was alone.

Her first night spent alone was bearable, if only because of her flames.

Nevertheless, she missed the murmur of sounds in the background, even if she rarely joined in.

More importantly, she now feared her flame.

She wished there was someone to reassure her that she was ok.

Wish granted.

Her brother had followed her.

She opened her mouth to tell him to go back, but her selfishness won out.

They all needed companionship, even a creature of the flame
•••
But where could she go, this lone spark? Even if they were comfortable with her, she was not comfortable with them, and she could not give up her flame.

So she went somewhere where they could not be burnt.

And so they wandered to the domain of the fire wryms.

Because fire cannot burn fire, can it?
