Youthful Game
Shemp had the wiggles. He was a spiral, he usually had the wiggles, but this was the restless wiggles which were the worst wiggles. He remembered last time he had the wiggles like this. It hadn't ended well. His mother spent the better portion of two hours trying to un-knot him and his brothers while his father made head and tails of all the heads and tails in the sibling ball, but then dad started giggling at the mess, and they'd started giggling at the mess, and poor mom had to give up and stomp off for a bit before returning to the task. She didn't think it was funny.

Mom wasn't home right now. Shemp didn't dare go to his brother for fear of tangling with them and making another mess like that. Just the thought of it had him looping his tail around his foot and his neck cramped from the effort of keeping it straight. No. He could not tie himself up either.

Desperate for a distraction he skittered across the stone floor of the lair courtyard (laid years ago by a half-brother and still as durable as the day it was crafted) and up the steep embankment. Or at least, almost up the embankment. Part way he was distracted by some pebbles. They were small and colorful, mostly round in shape. He gave one a good wack and watched it roll. It bounced between the flowers and clattered out across the floor a goodly distance. Pleased, he whacked another, then another.

When his mother came home later he was tossing the pebbles from paw to paw while laying on his back. He had two going in a cross pattern from front paw to back paw, the blue pebble going front left to bottom right, and a green going from bottom left to front right. The stones would transfer between the two back and the two front, then cross again over the top.

Much to his amusement, his mother set aside whatever she'd been doing, rolled over onto her back, and tried his game.

Joy
If asked, the greatest gift Shemp would say he'd been given was a smile. He remembers fondly an evening in the market where he'd been putting on a street performance. He drew quite the crowd with his colorful juggling balls and his own cheerful warm coloration. He had this routine where he wove figure eights with himself while tossing the balls. There was a somber dragoness there, he'd seen her before around the market earlier before he'd settled into his show, and she'd been just as serious then too.

Nearing the end of his act, he gave an uncertain "Eeeb-eeeb-eeeb-eeeb!" which always made the hatchlings giggle and out went the balls in high arcs. He loved this bit, the certain set of faces that he'd messed up, they would fall to the ground and get dulled with the dust. An acrobatic tumble, a quick grab, and those faces morphed to shocked delight as he presented the balls safely caught in his front paws, the last one falling to balance on his snout.

The dragoness was grinning, her face a mask of childish delight. He grinned at her, their gazes caught, and she nodded his way, slow and respectful. He made a sweeping bow which the crowd marked as the end of the performance, but the two of them knew was his acknowledgement to her.

Shemp saw her weeks later, somber again, but when she saw him her gaze softened and a small smile curled the edge of her mouth.

He never knew her name, but would never forget that smile.
