A Perception
They were are market when the subject came up. Curly was with some visiting fledgling hatchlings when a fae chipped up with "You're mom's kinda weird, you know that, right?"The other fledglings giggled. Curly blinked. "What?" The fae's fins took on a stiff, knowing posture, half folded, but held rigid. "Everyone sees it. She's off by herself in that weird lair she's built. Doesn't keep a steady mate. Gives her kids out to the clan to teach. Your mom is weird." "Your parents don't get you tutors and mentors?" Curly asked, astonished. Most of the fledglings there shook their heads. Perturbed, Curly watched other families that day and asked others questions about their home life. Indeed, no one lived in quite the situation Curly did, and that realization bothered him. He was at the age where he started noticing possible mates, see. And if he was weird, then obviously, the maybe-mates wouldn't want him. Weird kids didn't get mates. Everyone knew that.
A Change
Influenced by the teenage encounter, Curly sought out what it was that made dragons attractive. There were certain standards that seemed universal: Treasure and gems, good natural coloration, and food.Curly always considered himself decently handsome, and the alternatives to alter his coloration were honestly too risky. But even a dud dragon could be popular with wealth and a full food store. Never having lacked for food (he and his brothers knew all the best spots to go hunting) he glutted himself and shared freely, gaining weight, but also gaining friends. Because of his food it was assumed he had treasure, how else could he eat so well? He secretly sold his excess gatherings and started to accumulate his supposed wealth. He was awed by the admiration flashing a little treasure could garner. So he flashed more. Then he showed off more. Then he discovered that too much treasure in one place was grounds for jealously, something he'd be unknowingly courting from the start of his rise. Friends rapidly turned against him, making him wonder how close of friends they'd been in the first place. Now caught in the spotlight, Curly found himself in a cycle of excess, wealth, food, and parties. He wasn't sure how to break out. Wasn't sure if he actually wanted to. No one questioned where he'd come from so long as he kept sharing and buying. |
