Biography

Mysterious glyphs covering the tundra's body distinguished themselves with a gentle glow despite her dense coat of fur. The symbols radiated a sense of ancient wisdom, of magic as old as the world itself.

Their range extended from Harnax's head to the tip of her tail, including all four paws and the furless membrane of her wings.

Even if it were possible to decipher the runic markings and find meaning in them, the lines shifted under scrutiny as though they were deliberately evading any attempt to understand them. The knowledge they represented was not meant for me.

Though cosy, the den was spacious, cool, and well-ventilated. You will seldom find a centaur underground, and for good reason, but I had to admit I was as comfortable there as I would ever be with a mountain of earth and stone overhead.

Harnax and her mate enjoyed the company of a modest-sized family in their subterranean lair. All members of the family shared similar markings across their dun coats; patches of large, dark spots separated by lighter channels. They are clad in their summer coats, as are most tundra on these grassy plains.

At first glance, they seem identical, but side-by-side you start to notice how the pattern differs between individuals. Even so, tundra seldom confuse one another as scent is their primary sense.

However, one individual stands apart from the others.

Acquisition of her esoteric markings is the sole major event that she can recall clearly. She recounted a tale of losing her way in an ancient forest as a hatchling, and of receiving the assistance of a being she described as a walking flower. The flower encouraged Harnax to make a deal; she would be led back to safety if she allowed her saviour to inscribe a spell upon her essence.

Hopelessly lost, hungry, and frightened, she agreed - without even asking what after the spell's nature. Chanting a melodious litany, the flower began to imbue Harnax with the spell's magic. It didn't hurt, she remembered. Strange symbols began to shine through her fur, but it felt almost as though they belonged there.

Honouring its end of the bargain, the flower fluttered ahead on petal wings and guided the dragon to a sheltered glade. She remained lost, but was able to rest and recover in the green sanctuary.

The tundra insists that her day to day life was unchanged by the event. She expected the runes to fade over time, but they never did. As for the purpose of the magic they hold, it never manifested. Harnax admitted that she had no interest in finding out what they did, nor why the little flower had inscribed her with them.

I quietly wondered whether it had anything to do with the tundra's striking emerald eyes and their meaning, but I cannot presume to guess at the whims of forest imps. I was glad to leave their den and stand above ground again, even though I was none the wiser than when I had arrived.

About the author

Dunhoof_Ambassador.png
Elmara is a wandering taxonomist, seeking to both broaden and narrow the ways in which dragonkind is classified. Her mission leads her far from her herd's ancestral homelands to regions no hoof has dared to tread since the world was new. She has found friends and met many helpful allies along the way, though the road was paved with no shortage of peril.

Dragons come many different shapes, sizes, and colours, and new genetic possibilities are always being discovered. Elmara's work is already cut out for her, and the caprice of magic often turns all she believes to be true on its head from time to time, but she hasn't relented yet.

Her work is an ongoing project, but her progress so far can be read in the Encyclopaedia Draconica. Ever grateful for contributors and tolerant of critics, she can be reached through Clover, her carrier crow.
