"We have lingered in the chambers of the sea.
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown.
Till human voices wake us, and we drown."

- T.S. Eliot

All rivers lead back to the ocean. Kraken knows this better than anyone as it was a river that first carried him out to the sea. He was still curled tightly within his egg as torrents of water eroded away the swampy banks where his nest had been. The river rose and lifted Kraken’s egg, rocking it gently as the unborn hatchling was washed down the stream. The rushing waters finally collided with the Sea of A Thousand Currents and the egg was left to float amidst the blue abyss of the ocean.

When the dragon hatched, his nest was a tangled bed of kelp. His egg cracked open, its fibrous shell snapping apart like a coconut and the hatchling gasped for breath until finally, he slipped off the kelp and into the ocean. Seawater had infiltrated his egg through several cracks in the shell and the hatchling never developed fully as a result. His skin remained porous and amphibious instead of hardening with rigid scales and his lungs were small and deflated, incapable of supplying adequate amounts of oxygen. Instead, fetal gills remained on his neck and he found it much easier to breathe underwater than he did upon land.

There were other anomalies as well. The hatchling’s form resembled that of a Guardian, although genetically he should have been a Spiral. The placement of his gills also altered other anatomical structures within his throat, including his vocal cords, which were now incapable of emitting sound. Even the hatchling’s eyes were abnormal, allowing him to see clearly underwater despite the blurred vision he experienced on land.

Without parents to guide him, Kraken was forced to rely on other creatures of the sea to teach him how to survive. Often, he would sit on the bottom of the ocean with his mouth open and wait for unsuspecting fish to swim into his maw before snapping down. He found that it helped if he wriggled his tongue slightly, a lure to curious fish searching for food.

While his wings were too small and flimsy to support flight in the air, Kraken used them as fins to propel him underwater. He lived peacefully beneath the waves for many years without encountering another dragon. On land, however, there were rumors about him - a monster who was responsible for stealing all the good fish from clans inhabiting the Fishspine Reef. They came after him one day with pointed spears that pierced through his soft skin and he was forced to flee from his home and seek refuge elsewhere. He didn’t understand their cruelty.

Eventually, Kraken came to a shelf beneath the sea; a drop-off that plummeted downwards into abyssal darkness. He was used to the shallow waters and reefs full of colorful corals and fish, but perhaps in such a deep, dark place, there would be no one who could harm him. So Kraken allowed himself to sink, down and down into the abyssal trench until he felt a soft layer of detritus underfoot and knew he had reached the bottom.

In the darkness, Kraken still carried parts of the surface with him. Bits of marine plant and animal life that clung to his skin and emitted a soft bioluminescent glow. Certainly, it made it easy to attract food, but it also caught the attention of other creatures that resided in the darkness.

He came across the beast one day, her form a dark tower amidst the ruins of a sunken city. She watched Kraken from a distance for a long time before her voice echoed through the water. “You do not belong here” she said, startling the young dragon who couldn’t figure out where the sound had come from. “But, alas, I understand. The surface dwellers are cruel, are they not?” The Guardian wasn’t used to being spoken to, but still he understood and nodded slowly. Leviathan spoke once more, “I was angry with them for a long time too, but now I believe that they simply must be shown how to be kind. Of course, there are a few who are beyond saving” the massive Imperial scoffed.

Kraken heeded the words and slowly, he allowed himself to swim back to the surface of the sea. There are rumors about him now, a great sea-dwelling creature who travels the ocean and brings good luck. He chases fish into the hunters’ nets and allows divers to follow him to where there are the best oysters and clams. Sometimes, he is even invited ashore and he comes, wrapped in kelp to prevent his skin from drying out, though he can't stay long. He is mute, but has learned enough of draconic languages to understand and write. Over time, he has even come to enjoy the company of other dragons and indeed, the ones who are kind protect him from any who would do him harm.
