Eggplant clapped enthusiastically, spinning in circles in his seat as his magical fireflies danced around his head. “That was great! Encore!”

Symphonia couldn’t help the swell of pride, love, contentedness. It had been a while since she felt that way; she missed home, but she had all the most important pieces here. Besides, a new audience was always nice and… traveling with the Tempest Chase brought a new audience every week or two.

“Thanks, Eggplant!” Runa wing-walked up beside Symphonia and looked up at her. “That really was beautiful. You should be the lead singer. At least for a few songs.”

“Oh, no.” Symphonia waved away the notion. Runa’s voice was gorgeous. It wasn’t her fault she couldn’t improvise as she sang. “No, I think the current arrangement is fine. I need to get more settled before taking any more responsibility, anyway.”

Runa laughed. “They’re monster hunters, not critics. They’ll be happy if you can hold their favorite tune better than a barking jester.”

“Sing that song!” Eggplant shouted from his seat. “You know the one, the one about growing up!”

“But that’s a sad one,” Symphonia said quietly, and Eggplant looked confused.

“Oh, they’re all softies here,” Runa said with a smile and playful tag on Symphonia’s shoulder. “They don’t like to admit it, but they love it when a good singer can get them bawling.”

Symphonia shook her head. “No, no. Maybe later. Let’s take it again, Runa? From the top? There’s a bit there in the middle I think I’m missing the note on.”

“Oh, okay.” Runa gave a quick hum to set their key and went back to her starting place ont he makeshift stage. “Ready? One-two━”

Symphonia is a great singer, having come from a long career of singing for her old clan in Nature territory. She rescued her Charge, Eggplant, to be a singer. She followed her mate, Birch, to lands unknown knowing she could always sing. It’s been the one stable thing in her life━at least it feels that way right now. Of course, things always change. She just wasn’t aware how much could change, and so quickly, until they joined the Tempest Chase, a band of roving monster hunters.

Symphonia has absolutely no interest in becoming a fighter, and is somewhat appalled that Eggplant seems to have made a 180-degree switch from promising singer to gung-ho warrior. She hopes it's just a phase, but other Guardians in the Chase have counseled her otherwise. Brine in particular, with his Dryad ambassador Charge, views it as his job to mitigate that danger somewhat, and, in the end, make sure his Charge is who she's supposed to be. He wouldn't be a very good Guardian if he stood in the way of that. Though it took some convincing, Symphonia agrees that’s a good way to look at it.

Once she finally settled in, she found she quickly made several friends, mostly Guardians. After all, Symphonia isn’t the only Guardian to ever be consumed with worry that her Charge is getting into more than he can handle. The Chase, though full of capable dragons that are used to taking care of themselves, is full of Guardians worried that their Charges have finally poked monsters larger than they can handle. Of course, most of the Guardians in the Chase have some job other than simply singing. Many of them are much better at fighting and defending than their Charges could ever hope to be.

In her spare time (which is surprisingly short; monster hunters sure love their downtime), Symphonia has been quietly training with Lorne and a few other physically-capable Guardians, just in case she has to protect Eggplant from something a little too big for him. As a Lightning dragon, Symphonia is used to doing whatever she has to in order to make the situation work. She doesn’t have to like it. If she has to learn to fight to continue protecting Eggplant, she guesses she'll do it.

Symphonia’s Mith friend, Yarrow is Birch’s Mith’s cousin. In fact, it was Yarrow that introduced Symphonia and Birch. Yarrow is much more adventurous than Symphonia is, and, though he can’t quite carry a tune, he can carry just about everything else. Once a dock-worker, he would sing a few poorly-constructed shanties about alcohol and waves and whatnot, and would help set up Symphonia’s sets when she would sing for the clan. He couldn’t imagine life without her songs.

Symphonia’s mate, Birch, has a somewhat larger sense of adventure than Symphonia has. Symphonia would rather stay home and Birch always wants to go outside. Nevertheless, they make a good pair. They’re both inherently supportive, and they build each other up in such a sickeningly sweet way that other dragons can’t help but roll their eyes even as they smile. Symphonia is not interested in animals, but, for Birch, she is. Birch is tone-deaf, but, for Symphonia, he tries to sing.

When Eggplant was a lonely young hatchling, he would pass the time by singing to himself. Symphonia heard him and the rest, as they say, is history. Though Eggplant has somewhat grown out of his desire to be a great traveling singer or something like that, like Symphonia does, he still enjoys singing with her on a non-performing basis. Eggplants quick and sudden attempt at “growing up” and out of singing took Symphonia by surprise and, admittedly, made her a bit sad. But, of course, he does his best to remind her that he’ll always be her Charge, whether he sings or not.
