Coming from a loveless and hard working family, nothing was ever gifted to Gula, he had to earn everything the hard way, by working or by fighting for it. Older, stronger siblings would push him away with little remorse at the dinner table, his parents would tell him to shut it and get strong should he try to cry for attention, everything, from food to the occasional pat on the head had to be earned.

His family were outsiders, lower class in a clan ruled by beauty, wealth and monarchy. They provided the rich people the things they needed for their wealthy lives, as thanks they weren't kicked out and maybe got a few let over scraps. A hard life that no family should be forced to lead, nevertheless a young child. When other children were out playing, Gula had to work side by side with his siblings and parents to bring at least some food on the table, even if it broke his bones and crushed his muscles.

There was little time between working, eating and sleeping to actually live the life they were struggling to keep, but somehow, Gula made it work, sometimes he even managed to sneak into the city in whose outskirts his family lived.

It was during one of those trips, that Gula first saw the clan’s princess and he fell for her head over heels, admiring her from afar and dreaming silly little daydreams during work in which he somehow became her shining knight in armor.

His chance to become such came years later, when Gula was no longer a meager, half starved child with too hard eyes for his age, but rather an equally meager, but way tougher adolescent. The royal family was holding a tournament to find the best fighter in their clan, the winner would earn the position of the princess' bodyguard, something that sounded too perfect for a struggling dragon like Gula.

The other fighters – all of them rich, well fed boys with fancy armor and even fancier weapons while Gula had nothing but a few thin rags and his claws – laughed at him but allowed him to stay out of mockery, boasting that they would use him as a dummy for their warming up practices. They did not except a lowlife like Gula to know how to counter their over the top complicated attack patterns with a simple kick in the groin area or a good aimed claw full of sand into their eyes.

This way, Gula fought his way up to the top, not caring that the weapons tattered the outer edge of his wings with each block, not bothering about the many open wounds he had all over his tail and legs from gripping and ripping armor apart, he had suffered worse during the dangerous work in one of the many black smithereens of the clan, where hot iron was common and tools a rare thing.

While royalty was not overly amused that a lowlife won their tournament, they did not pulled back their offer, only cutting away a huge chunk of the additional payment, but even the bit that they payed Gula was more than enough for his family to raise their standards, enough that they wouldn't starve with one pair of claws lesser to work, while he was off living in the fancy castle and protecting the pretty princess.

Gula did not expect that the life in the castle would be so much harder than his past life however. Everything he did, from talking to walking over just standing there, seemed to bother someone of more importance than Gula’s entire existence ever could be. The princess smiled, mostly out of pity, Gula thought and every time he tried harder to not shame her anymore, only to fail harder than before.

So when the time came for Blossom – the princess – to be married off to a stranger to gain her home clan some more importance or whatever it was kings and queens strive for, Gula was relieved. He had been well known and hated by the nobles in the castle by now, while the maids, butlers and cooks found him hilarious, so that he would take any opportunity to get out of that hole of snakes.

They weren't even a week on the road, when Blossom decided to pick up some random stranger, a pretty girl, Gula had to admit even though his heart belonged to Blossom alone, but nevertheless a dirt poor beggar.

He tried to protest, tried to talk some sense into Blossom, which she ignored much to his frustration. Little did he know, of the tales and false promises his mistress whispered into the girl’s ears, until poor Lecia succumbed to the very idea of switching identity. He was completely obvious, when Blossom invited him in one evening, presented him with a meal that made his mouth water.

He didn't noticed the smile that crept onto Blossoms face, pushed the strange tingling sensation of his tongue on the exotic food until he all the sudden, couldn't move a single muscle. Falling over like a wet sack of potatoes, Gula could do nothing but gasping sluggishly for air, staring with eyes wide open in absolute terror at Blossom, which was suddenly over him, smiling like a maniac, knife in her delicate hand.

When she opened her mouth to tell him about horrible things, about mad things in that sweet voice of hers, Gula tried to beg her for mercy with his eyes alone, thinking that she would kill him. Instead she did something far worse, she stemmed his jaws open and used the knife to cut his tongue, to render him mute and unable to ever spill her secret from which he had no idea until she had started to monologue.

The pain almost caused him to black out, he would have screamed and even tried to push her away, when she gave him a sweet, loving kiss on his bloodied lips as if this would made things any better, as if telling 'I love you' would redeem the cruelty she just had done, but he could do nothing but choke on his own blood and tears.

When Blossom left, she left him soulless, heartless, took every spark of warmth Gula had left in him with her, turned him from a foolhardy young man that simply struggled with his place in society, into a cold, almost brutish creature, that clung with all its power to life, trying to survive every means necessary.

The poison his princess and former mistress used, thankfully slowed his heartbeat, prevented him from bleeding out until he could move again, find help to mend his wounds. Muted and unable to return or even to go after Blossom, Gula was forced into the dirty work of mercenary, because he could fight and little else, he took odd job after odd job, all to just survive, a thing he knew from his earlier life, when he just had to go on and on and on, work and find a way to repay Blossom for her 'kindness'.

That she was untouchable for him, did little to dampen the wrath that boiled within Gula, the thoughts alone were enough fuel to keep him going.
