SPRUCE |
NATURE FLIGHT REPRESENTATIVE AND HERBALIST
|
In the valleys of Arvarinar, where glistening streams gurgle and murmur by the high redwood trees, the dense forests have a mind on their own. Getting lost there without the aid of one of those who have been here for ages past is not a good idea, for you might come across Spruce, this dragon who is more of a spirit than anything else and who knows each and every spot in the forests of Arvarinar. And though he will not hurt you, he will trap you in his stories of the wonders these forests hold. And he is much more kind than his disgruntled expression may make him seem.
Spruce never cared much about the concerns of the island inhabitants. He remembers just being there, and before that, he was just as much a part of the trees, the rivers, the stones, as he is now. Every twig and every pebble is him, and at the same time, is not. He only knows that he was not made of the same light as Seimei or the Herald, though the Herald was there before forests came into existence. He does not fight, but he guards the forests with each and every of his breaths. When the Shade attacked Arvarinar, he mourned for every flower and every butterfly. His strength cannot rival that of the Shade, after all. Maybe even Seimei is much more powerful than him, he thinks. But he does what he is able to do and continues to guard the forests even when it seems a hopeless thing to do. After the attack of the Shade, Spruce was devastated and felt darkness enveloping his heart. But when Seimei asked him to aid him in cleansing the forests from the remaining influence of the Shade, he did not falter. Light was to dwell in this place again. With his power, the trees began to grow again. Broken twigs were mended. Scorched meadows became carpets of flowers once more. The ponds could be a home to fish and water lilies, both shining in radiant colours. It almost seemed more beautiful than it had before the Shade had attacked. For a long time then, there was not much of a change in Arvarinar. A solemn silence hung around the temple that Spruce had only ever watched from afar. Seimei's shrine was quiet as well, except for the ringing of bells in the wind and the sound of prayers during dawn and dusk, when they lit golden lanterns in and around the wooden shrine. During this time, Spruce felt the need to prepare for what might come in the future. He might not have known the devotees of the Golden Crow, not a single one had ever spoken to him, but he knew that many were injured beyond the hope of healing during the attack of the Shade. Spruce knows all the plants that grow on the island, and he knows what healing qualities they possess. So he built himself a hut - not for himself to live in, for that he does not need - but to storage flasks of potions inside. Combining the various plants with the pure water that is found here, added in accordance with the light of the moons, stars and the sun, as Seimei taught her, he was able to produce potent concoctions that could heal a dragon in need. This way, he would be prepared for another attack of this kind, and fewer would have to suffer. He does not strive for the greatness of the Herald. He would not mimic it if he could, and he could not be enchanted by the look of the Herald alone. The teachings of Golden Light, however, stuck with him. He uses his interpretation of the teachings when brewing his potions, and he feels that his wish to help others makes them all the more powerful. When the younger dragons arrived, he made it his pastime to fool them by speaking only in riddles, much to their dismay. Even once they realised that Spruce posed no threat, most of them still decided to mostly leave him alone in her hut and in the reaches of the forests, where he is happiest. When they were in need of help for healing, he gladly came to them, however. |
