Time never had been/is/will be linear for Alaurun. Ever since breaking free of her egg, it was like she was caught in the whirling torrents of time- adrift with no raft to cling to. Just as the present happens around her, she is feeling the echoes of the past as well as tasting the limitless possibilities of the future. The only thing that would bring sense to the maelstrom was closing her eyes, so the stimulus of the present was lessened. Eventually, it got to the point where she was tying a piece of cloth over her eyes.
But even with the blindfold, it took her up to her adolescence to finally get used to being thrown around in time’s currents, enough to where the overstimulation wasn’t nearly as oppressive.
One day, Alaurun simply knew it was time to leave her birth clan. New horizons had been inevitable from the start, and now she needed to recognize them. She left with nothing but a few days worth of rations and the blindfold around her eyes, knowing her future would find her.
And it did, in the form of a clan headed by a grumpy Guardian and a kindly Tundra. They welcomed her with open arms, and Alaurun knew in her heart as well as her head that she had found the home she was destined for.
Even for a Water dragon, Alaurun’s oracular gifts are extremely potent. Once she learned to deal with the constant onslaught of visions and phantom sensations, she became able to pick out different threads of possibilities, and predict the most likely outcome.
Upon reaching adulthood, Alaurun was officially deemed the clan’s oracle. To commemorate the occasion, she was gifted an intricately woven veil that would be a status symbol as well as a functional garment. To this day, Alaurun wears it with pride.
With so much knowledge, though, comes a heavy heart and a weighted consciousness. Time is a complex entity, and there are some things that simply cannot be avoided. Fixed points, no matter how tragic, must be allowed to happen, or time itself would unravel.
But that doesn’t stop her from carrying the guilt with her.
There are so many great, terrible secrets and truths that Alaurun knows. So many words that, if spoken, would bring chaos. Alaurun herself barely copes with them, and that’s after a lifetime of acclimation. To unleash such knowledge on a common dragon would drive them mad.
So she watches, and waits. When she can, she gives advice and guides her clan away from danger.
When she can’t, she takes off her veil so she can memorize her clanmates’ faces. It will be the last time she’ll see them in the present.
Or the future. Death is one thing that even her gifts cannot conquer. It’ll come for her too, someday.
But in the meantime, Alaurun is going to try her damndest to save who she can.
