It was raining ashes again. The flakes were falling slowly but steadily, almost like snowflakes. But it wasn’t snow. He had seen snow once, it was paper-white and cold. Turning the surroundings into something fair and beautiful. Ashes, on the contrary, would cover everything with a thick layer of grey dust, the air would be hot and painful to breathe. There was no beauty in it, he thought while he looked up into sky. The falling ashes were already blocking the sunlight, it was dark and gloomy, with the furnaces being the only source of light. He sighed. His passion was metalwork. And the dragons of the Fire Flight were the most skilled metalworkers of Sornieth. Thus, his journeys had eventually led him here, into the heart of the Ashfall Waste. But the longer he stayed here, the greater became his longing for his lush green homeland. He sighed again and turned back to the hearth. Someday, when he had become a skilled metalworker himself, he would return home.

“I think the twist should be a bit wider. And the leaves, I’m still not sure whether they are really maple leaves. The drawing is simply too faded.” Mithras was holding the old parchment closer to the bronze twist Ilyrion had just pulled out of the water bucket. It was still steaming and he snatched the parchment out of the other Pearlcatcher’s claws. “Careful!” he said. “This is the original, not a copy. If Omni knew you had brought it down here, he’d be furious.” Mithras pretended to look at least a bit guilty. “Well, you know how he and the other archivers are. He didn’t have time to make a copy, because they are stretched to their limits with all the re-organizing and cataloging. But we have work to do, too. Restoring the old buildings is important, and there are currently only the two of us who take care of all the masonry and metal works.” Ilyrion took the bronze twist and put it back into the furnace. “Don’t forget Vhagar, our blacksmith, and Elia, the glassmaker. They are also working on the stone buildings. You are right though, we are stuck without the proper templates. But wouldn’t it be better to bring this before the Council rather than sneaking things out behind the archivers’ backs?” Mithras shrugged. “Maybe.” He said. “I could ask Sunfyre I guess. He is very fond of the crumbling structures. He even has a proper painting of the old historic center in his study, or at least a painting of what is supposed to be the historic center. I’m still rather sceptic of what that priestess claims to see in some underground pool of water.” Mithras looked at the now hot-red glowing metal. He watched while Ilyrion pulled it out the fire and carefully got to work on the bronze twist. “Could you please pass me the small chisel?” Ilyrion asked. The requested chisel flew through the air as if by magic. He snatched it out of the air and began to re-shape the twist. Ilyrion, in contrast to his friend Mithras, believed in what Usako saw in her visions. There was something mysterious and otherworldly about that seer from the water flight. When he looked into her deep-blue eyes, he always felt unsettled. Unfortunately, the Sanctuary’s furnace had been dug deep into the rock cliff marking the transition from the swampy Gladeveins to the Shrieking Wilds and the Seer’s Pond was not far away. He shuddered. That “pond” and its inhabitants were an eerie lot. He put the bronze twist back into the water bucket. Mithras was still there. He was a very skilled stonemason, his magical abilities as a Runecatcher even made him an extraordinary one. But all metallic substances were impervious to his magic. Metal, unlike stone, was a dead material to him. Nevertheless, he was fascinated by Ilyrion’s work and could spend hours watching him heat, hammer and chisel metal into the desired form. “Didn’t you want to go and ask Sunfyre for help?” Ilyrion asked. “And while you are there, best sneak that piece of parchment back into the archives before anyone misses it. If we want to make a point, they shouldn’t catch you with some old priceless scroll.” Mithras sighed. “You’re right. I’ll bring it back straight away. Then I’ll go looking for Sunfyre. With any luck, we’ll get an “official” copy by the end of the week.” He grinned reassuringly, snatched the parchment form Ilyrion’s outstretched claws and marched out of the furnace.
