Biography

Mortem- Ghost Witch

Ghost Flame Tail Ribbon Nightfall Imp Ghost Flame Wing Ribbon

Mind the spirits, for they are everywhere. There may be one hovering just beyond your shoulder, another curled underfoot. Still more inhabit the trees, creating the whistles and whispers that twist through the forest at night. The ghosts of this world are many in number, and powerful when they choose to be.

Mortem, however, is just as powerful. Where the living fear to tread, she walks willingly all the same, head raised high all the while. She has a gift that allows her to see the spirits that make their marks on Sornieth, and more than that, she has the power to bend them to her will. Benign specters can be sent on to the next life with a mere word from her, and the more dangerous spirits can be subdued with a wave of her claws. As bridge between life and death, she serves both sides, preventing harm to either.

Curiously, she has noted a surge in spirits rising from the border between Light and Shadow, always a liminal space in its own right. Something is stirring there, she thinks, and it is her duty to bring it peace.

But how to bring peace to a land that seems constantly embroiled in conflict? It's no secret that the dragons of the two domains often find themselves at odds with one another, and their restless spirits are often unwilling to set such differences aside. It even infects other specters too, and as time goes on, Mortem finds it more and more difficult to travel through the border areas without expending all her energy banishing spirits to the realms where they belong.

As a result, she's made the Moon Siren Coven something of a headquarters for her endeavors. There, she has found witches powerful enough to aid in her efforts, not to mention a safe haven from the strain that directing the dead places upon her. They welcomed her with open arms after she assisted in a major exorcism, sending away a spirit too powerful for the coven to banish without outside help, and since then, they have offered her shelter, food, and copious quantities of incense and herbs to assist in her work.

The most useful resources, though, have been the friendships Mortem has cultivated. Arastina the afterlife guide has come in handy more than once, her eerie lantern acting as a beacon for lesser spirits eager to move on. When she accompanies Mortem on excursions, if only for a couple weeks rather than Mortem's typical months at a time, that light is a boon, illuminating the way forward and preventing Mortem from wasting her energy on weaker ghosts.

As for Mairin the banshee, she is a sobering companion, always cloaked in her gloom and sorrow. As Mortem understands it, until the very last of the Moon Siren Coven perishes, Mairin is bound to mourn every single death with her shrieking and wailing. There is no hope for freedom except in the afterlife, and even then, the banshee worries that she will remain trapped until her dear witches' spirits have all moved on. Mortem and Arastina are her greatest hope and closest friends as a result, the only dragons with the power to ensure that she will not be left mourning for all eternity. It is a sobering thought to know that Mairin will outlive them all, to be sure, but Mortem is happy to use this life to make sure someone else can be at true rest in the next.

Doing that, though, means she will have to have a greater understanding of the disruptions along the borders. Until the Tangled Wood is not teeming with the restless dead, her claws are full with danger, and the burden rests largely on her shoulders. So few mortals can do as she does, and she takes her duty to this life and all those after with the greatest seriousness. Someone must, after all.
