It's inside one of the crystals that her mother gives her. She can feel a pulse inside it, queries what that means and is met with bemused looks, a question instead of an answer. At first she ignores it, it's not worth the effort, not until it annoys her that no one else can hear it. Do you really not hear it? She endeavours to find out then, and devours knowledge like she's starving for it, she sneaks into the mighty libraries and she reads everything she can before they have to leave, she spends the money she takes from stray pockets to buy tomes, trades them for more, and no answers still. In this time she becomes well-rounded with knowledge of the magical arts, but still no answers for her question. Anger, in the end, answers it. She takes the crystal and smashes it. She sees a whisper escape and she chases it, catches it, and she realises. Souls. Here she'd imagined they were a fluke, but now she has proof. She tests it- not on anyone who'd be missed, not on other dragons. Stray animals, stray beasts, she snares them. It's easy when you know how. What will she do with them? Well, they make pretty night lights, if you can't hear their quiet moaning, the thump of their phantom hearts. She sells some of them, lazy as anything, she sprawls next to her mother's stall and passes them off as enchantments. Her mother approves of her trickery. She argues it isn't trickery when they don't ask. It's all well and good until she takes what she shouldn't. A beastclan member, a harpy of some kind, she doesn't pay much attention as it goes limp and the light beats. It's only when claws shred her shoulder that she realises her mistake. She releases the souls, and in such number that the light show is a furnace, and whilst she is safe now, she won't be for long. She sighs, apologies, she hugs her father goodbye and she grabs what remains of her work. She has to prove this to someone, and prove it she shall.
