Armored Catfish White Queen
Venomspite Invader Isopod

The Bone Castle’s nursery chamber is occasionally left unsupervised, during which time Decayspawn usually hatch. Perhaps they do this to avoid hurting their caretakers, who are unable to handle their uncontrolled power without significant training and experience. To entertain them until they decide to leave the premises (which can take a few minutes to an hour from hatching), various objects are left in the nursery for them to play with or sate their hunger on.

The first few objects they interact with can be identified by the putrid rot creeping upon them. These objects are handed to the high priest, who uses the identity of the objects and the rotted patterns left from the hatchling’s teeth and claws to divine their potential.

Decayspawn are chaotic. They are forces of great, unpredictable change. Their purpose is to sow discord into the clans of the Scarred Wasteland, separating the adaptable survivors from their weaker kin. They split the membrane of their eggs with an initial goal to spread across Plague, determined to fill their lungs with its putrid air. They are selfish creatures, often too powerful for their youth, sometimes not enough to make it to adulthood unscathed. Those children who die out in the Wasteland become nothing more than unfortunate scavenges for others–they do not deserve their mother’s thoughts. But there are plenty others who pass their first few years, and it’s these terrifying ones who throw the Plaguelands into turmoil. The rich destruction they bring with them is their purpose, the reason their mother splintered them from her body in the first place.

Decay’s children are similar to their mother, capricious heralds of plague and disaster who care little for the lives of the weak. However, it is imperious to believe that exact replication of her being alone is enough to ensure their glory, a reality the queen is aware of. To ensure adaptability so that they might produce unique lineages, the essence of another dragon settles into the eggs, incubating alongside the Queen’s. Some will say this taints them. Decay knows better. She continues to pick and choose dragons, often to fulfill her own hidden agendas.

Clans that find themselves hosting one of Decay’s children gain significant political leverage, but they must be wary. Decayspawn forced to endure a middling clan quickly turn ambitious, and many lairs have met their demise due to the impatience of a single one.

Aseneth is a sacrilegious consort in the eyes of the castle's inhabitants. A known ally of the Shade King to the west, the fact that Aseneth is even walks the Castle's halls tears a hole through the clan's staunch anti-Shade beliefs and image. Somehow, he has convinced the Queen into allowing his essence to permeate his eggs, and questions have arisen about her state of mind.

Yet there are some, who when passing the nesting chambers, glimpse the Queen herself leaning over the green pools. She whispers to the eggs, the day before they hatch, to "give him hell," with eyes as red as they've ever been. Whatever she's planning, it's worth risking the rumour of rampant faithlessness within the Castle's walls.

In addition to common characteristics of Decayspawn witnessed when Luminance is the father (orange bullet), children born of Aseneth's essence might have the following traits (yellow bullet). As usual, hosts (you!) may deny or accept these suggestions to fit better with the character you have in mind:

» Knowledge of the circumstances of their birth and their origins; horns on their head.

» Incredible ambition with cunning to match. Their selfishness is rooted in status. Unimpressed by most forms of leadership, their methods of acquiring power are disruptive, loud, and sometimes larger than they are. Those not useful to their means are treated with contempt at best, whereas those who would oppose them are eliminated swiftly. These children are chessmasters among Decay's children.

» It's known that Decay's bloodline is largely resistant to Shade. These children are a smidgen more vulnerable to Shade than normal--just a hair's width closer to its grasp, the tiniest bit more open to its voice. An almost invisible crack. But like how light seeps in through cracks, so does the Shade's lull. Of course, they would be disowned by the Queen if they were tainted.

Mary’s note: thanks for your interest in owning Decayspawn! I don’t have many rules regarding these children–I prefer watching what becomes of them and what people do with them. If you have any questions about these hatchlings, feel free to contact me on Flight Rising (or on Tumblr if you know it). I love to be contacted whenever these troublesome kids are involved in lore!

My only real rule is to not assume one of my dragons have interacted with or felt anything toward these kids unless I’ve okay’d it. The eggs are found, brought to the nursery and cared for like other eggs, and left until they are found empty. That should be the extent of their interaction with the Bone Castle unless we’ve discussed otherwise. I’m glad to plot things, so you should absolutely ask me if you’re unsure, but I’m very laissez-faire.

Feel free to adjust this bio as you need. I’ve tried to not imply anything about these kids beyond ‘terrifying jerks from Plague’. The item icons are only there to provide inspiration and are in no way indicative of my expectations (they are randomly generated). I can also provide renaming scrolls.
