Uncountable goods tumbled down the chutes at a rapid pace, unceremoniously falling into suspended burlap sacks to be sorted as possible. Heh stood in the center of it all, reaching a large claw into any which basket he desired. He would pull any old thing, a trinket or a bit of ore, and eye it scrupulously for about half a second before placing it into its proper place. A handful of assistants mingled about, but Heh was the fastest of them all, sorting up to a hundred items in ten minutes.

Every day was busy, of course (and you might be surprised at how much material wealth a clan full of gods and goddesses can accumulate). But the busiest days were hunt days when the clan's finest battlers would return with their hard-earned spoils. Items would tumble down the chutes and into the baskets, fine furs and luxurious trinkets collected from the surrounding beast clans. By now, the sorting crew was familiar with the types of objects that came through. But with the sort of ceaseless nature of the business, they were bound to stumble upon a rare treasure every now and then.

Today was that sort of day. As soon as Heh saw the small, red-speckled egg, he knew he was in for a surprise. "Why, it's a phoenix egg!" he said with an incredulous laugh. As his assistants all gathered around to see the fuss, the steady noise of items flowing in did not cease. "You all do know of the phoenix, yes?"

Heh did not pause for an answer to his question. "They are quite fascinating creatures, you see. They obtain new life from the ashes of their predecessor, regenerating themselves again and again in an infinite cycle of rebirth. Why, Hauhet would be delighted—she is the goddess of eternity, after all," he chuckled to himself. "They can live up to five hundred years, can you believe it! I once heard a glorious tale about the bird. Now let me recall it—"

"Uh, boss?" a young apprentice interrupted. "That sure is interesting and all, but I think we've been talking a bit too long—the baskets are getting full!"

Heh took a gander around him. Beast hides and scavenging materials were beginning to overflow, tumbling out onto the floor into jumbled piles. "Aw, we're going to be here forever," one worker moaned. The young helpers began to hurriedly return to their posts, attempting to manage the mess around their station.

Heh just grinned and set the phoenix egg safely aside. "Forever isn't so bad. Now, let me tell you more about the phoenix..."

Heh rarely leaves his post in the sorting room. He enjoys the steady inflow of items to be organized, and there are many; perhaps he—being a god of infinity, after all—is the only dragon who can handle the endless pile of things to do. Heh doesn't mind it at all, and he usually works with a pleasant smile on his face. By now he's grown so used to the busy nature of the job that he can work at an impossibly rapid pace.

What's more, the god can even multitask while he works—a skill usually spent telling countless tales about trinkets that come through, sparing no detail. Though his knowledge is limitless and his storytelling skills are rather engaging, most dragons can't help but lose interest after the second or third hour. Heh is a good-natured soul who doesn't fault them for it; that, of course, won't stop him from telling his tales.

Heh's mate Huahet is the only dragon who can keep up with his long, limitless conversations. Not just a listener, Huahet can even keep the pace, asking or commenting about this or that. Heh spoils the clever accountant with luxurious gifts that come through the sorting system, and in turn Huahet might maneuver some finances around to improve his ever-expanding inventory system. One thing is sure: the pair's love is everlasting.
