Nature does as it pleases. Life come as it wishes. That's what the shaman always told him. Of course, life also departs as it wishes. That, he had to learn himself.

When the shade grasped at his heels, what did the shaman do? They prayed their lady Gladkeeper would save him. When the shade crawled up his hocks, what did the shaman do? They took him to his parents' tree hollow, where they mourned his conscious body.

They set him down at the base of the banyan, where scales turned to soil. Roots wove around skulls, tangled with sinew, and slunk towards his talons. Nature does as it pleases. Life comes as it wishes.

No. He would not bend to life's wishes. Nature wouldn't take him. Not today. He snapped at his shadetouched legs. Nature let his blood cover the soil. The banyan's roots slithered over his severed shanks.

Memories dripped from his maw. Where the shade had been was soon opaline. He pulled himself up, stood on his new hind legs, and hobbled away from the banyan, away from nature.

Dendrobates now lives with Beryl in the Windswept Plateau's Reedcleft Ascent, helping her around her laboratory while occasionally conducting his own research in geology.
