Biography

THE COURT OF THORNS
━ CAVERNS BENEATH THE RUIN ━

Mav was born when the Court still occupied a section of the Hewn City, and is only one-quarter fey. Despite the challenges of growing up in the Court he has remained a kind soul and only wishes to help others. Unuathe encouraged this kindness, even though he knew it could make life harder on Mav. Through this encouragement - and much trial and error - Mav has become an adequate healer.

The Hewn City was – and continued to be – the last place for young ones to explore, especially unaccompanied. Dark things, both sentient and enchanted, lay around almost every corner. Though, having grown up in the ruins, Mav felt right at home. Even if a bit confined. Which meant it didn’t take long for his usual tunnels just outside the entrance of his family’s hidden section to bore him.

Mav planned to fix that today. There was a crack in one of the tunnels that sloped upwards that looked promising. If he could just widen it enough for him to slip through… There could be something new on the other side. Maybe even something his family hadn’t seen before. Or something that made them safer, let them travel farther and not risk being killed by dragons.

He shivered and made sure he was extra careful to be quiet as he crept along and especially careful as he worked to widen the crack in the wall. He paused frequently when plaster and stone clacked to the ground, not wanting to provoke anything on the other side he didn’t know about. The ghost in one of the dead ends behind him would care, it only attacked those that got too close, wandering in tight circles otherwise.

– – – – –

The farther he went along this new tunnel, the more certain Mav felt that there was something up ahead. It didn’t feel like it belonged in the ruins, more like it was just… there. Like him. Someone looking for something in the darkness.

Whatever he imagined them to be, something that looked vaguely familiar was not it. Well, not personally familiar, but the shape and size… Still bigger than him, either way. And whatever they were, they hadn’t seemed to notice him yet. If anything, they seemed uncertain which fork in the tunnel to take and were getting increasingly antsy the longer he was there.

“Are you lost?” Mav asked quietly after he decided he was out of reach.

“Ah!” The stranger cried out as they swiveled around to face the direction he was in, the delicate coverings over their face fluttering, “Who’s there? And… um, yes… I am.”

“I’m Mav.” He took a few steps forward, watching her curiously, “I haven’t seen anyone else like you in the ruins before… Where did you come from?”

“…Selachi,” Her head turned to follow Mav as he edged closer, “And I’ve never met anyone with that name. Where are you from?”

Mav spoke, the words slipping out before he could stop them, fey magic almost singing in the dark, “A question for a question… The Deepest Dark, and… you… The Brightest Light? But that’s not who I am. Can you tell me? ‘Mav.’ Why do you think they call me that name?”

The guardian paused and for a while, Mav wasn’t sure she’d answer. In all honesty, he wasn’t sure why he’d replied the way he had, but… there was something important in the words, he could feel it.

“What are you talking about? Please, can you help me find the way out? I don’t want to be trapped here in the dark forever, I want to be free.”

Mav smiled, forgetting that she couldn’t see him for a moment, the anxious feeling he had after he’d asked that last question fading away only to be replaced with a gentle tugging, “Sorry about that… I’ll help. Just follow my voice and I’ll get you back safe.”
