Berri is a calm, steady presence in Bamboo Hollow. If anything affects him, he never shows it, instead calmly offering up a solution and dealing with the problem. He is a hard worker, but he makes work seem effortless, and he never, ever complains. He has come to earn the respect of the younger dragons of the clan, giving him authority to some extent. He is loyal and obeys his queen, but if he believes he has a better idea he will present it calmly. He never loses his temper and knows how to keep his cool. In addition, he is extremely intelligent. He is an expert strategist with an opinion his clanmates have learned to always take into consideration. He himself if a great listener, and always quiet until he has something important to say. He is very observant and notices the tiny things that any ordinary dragon would overlook. However, despite being a talented war strategist, his claw-to-claw combat skills would fail him in battle. He is confident and a smooth speaker who can be very persuasive when necessary. Dragons look to him for ideas and help. Some find it strange that they can look at the same situation that Berri is looking at and see only despair, whereas Berri simply sees a problem that he is capable of fixing.
Berri hatched on the Reedcleft Ascent, in a clan of dragons that didn't love him. He was always the quietest and most reserved, hanging back in the shadiest corners, hidden, alone. He never wanted to play with the other hatchlings, or even talk to them. He always seemed distant and faraway, detached from all the conversations dragons tried to start with him. In the quiet, he thought. That was all. He was much smarter than all the others, even smarter than some of the adult dragons in his clan. But to him, his knowledge was a burden. He hated knowing so much, and wished he could just be like the other hatchlings, playing cheerfully, completely oblivious of the terrible things going on in the world. He was in pain, but to other dragons, he just appeared shady and dull. They couldn't see the complicated layers to him, the way he could see every complex layer of a dragon just from looking at them. And so his parents sold him. They wandered down the Reedcleft Ascent to central Windswept Plateau, where they met a Fae female named Moon, a Mirror male named Jade, and a Coatl female named Antheia, in a place known to them as Bamboo Hollow. Moon, who appeared to be the leader of the three, agreed to buy Berri and take him in. He was miserable, but didn't put up a fight. He knew that Bamboo Hollow could be a fresh start for him. His knowledge could be respected, and used to benefit the clan. His opinions could be valued. He could hide his emotions better. He could be a better listener. And most of all... he wouldn't have to hide.
Does he miss his family? Of course he does. They may be different from him, but they are still family. His mother. His father. His brother. But in Bamboo Hollow, he has a new family. When Glade joined the clan, he saw in her everything that he had ever wanted to be. She is not burdened by intelligence, like he is. She doesn't have to be serious the way Berri has to. She can be silly and cheerful, bounding around without a care in the world, because she doesn't know of the danger and pain. She can dance in the breeze and smile at him as her wings catch the wind, a smile that says everything's okay, because we have each other. She has the energy and heat to balance out his calm and cool. But most of all, she trusts him. She listens to him, and accepts him just the way he is. But he never expected his love for her to result in three lovely Spiral hatchlings. He never intended to be a father. He is the clan's tactician, who creates Bamboo Hollow's great battle strategies. Not a father. He especially did not intend to pass down the burden of knowledge to his poor sons- Aurora, who cannot handle the stress; and Opal, who acts just like Berri did at that age, which means hiding away in the shadows, alone and distant. Only his daughter, Nephrite, was blessed with the gift of freedom that Glade has- the gift which he fell in love with, so long ago.
