Biography

33866954.png     Birch the Zoologist
blooming strangler is a fashion accessory

Theme: The World is Beautiful
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Birch smiled, looking down toward his neck, though he could only barely see the strangler hanging there. He could feel its leaf-like scales against his, slithering to the opposite shoulder.

Irwin didn’t seem as pleased as Birch would have liked, but, hey. It was only their third day working together.

“Let me know if he’s not behaving.”

“He’s beautiful,” Birch said, feeling his heart beat a little faster when the snake went for a second lap around his neck. “I just want him to know I’m friendly.”

“Yeah, well.” Irwin didn’t seem impressed, but turned away all the same. Birch swelled with pride at the trust that showed. “There’ll be plenty of time for that.” He pulled a box of chirping crickets from a crate on the floor and opened it, plucking one out. He didn’t turn back just yet.

Birch looked around helplessly. He was a Guardian, for gods’ sake; he couldn’t be outwitted and out-muscled by a blooming strangler. But he didn’t want to startle the poor thing by trying to take it off his neck, either.

But as the strangler slowly tightened its grip, Birch felt the tiniest bit of concern. “Um, Irwin?” The Skydancer mumbled in response. “I think he’s choking me.”

“What?” Irwin turned and quickly offered the strangler the cricket--close enough for the strangler to see, but far enough away to coax him off Birch’s shoulder. “Come on; get off, mate.”

“No, no, he’s just scared,” Birch gasped.

Irwin coughed, and Birch could see he was trying to hide a smile. “Uh-huh. He won’t be scared if he chokes you, right? Interesting methods.”

Birch attended to his job a zoologist in his old clan for a long time before the Search called him. He felt terrible, uprooting his mate, Symphonia, and her Charge, Eggplant, but a Guardian must do what a Guardian must do. He said goodbye to his friends, promised they’d write, and they set out together. Even as they walked away from their old lives, face toward the future, Birch couldn’t help but notice: he was the luckiest dragon alive. Even if this whole Search-thing didn’t work out, he always had family.

Birch at least had some idea where to start: the home of Gain, a Guardian back in their old clan. Even though Gain wasn’t his Charge, Birch knew he was at least close to something that was. There were hints of worthiness about him: an old friend or relative, perhaps. The three of them survived on the proceeds of Symphonia and Eggplant’s traveling music act on their way. Not a lot of need for a zoologist on the way.

Once they arrived, Birch couldn’t help but notice for the second time in only so many weeks: he was the luckiest dragon alive. Not only had he found his Charge, but his own particular talents were often needed in her clan. A band of roving monster hunters could always use another student of the condition of creatures. Birch settled in to continue his studies and get to know his mysterious Charge, Medic. She was a talented healer, the matriarch of a large family, and a good story-teller. Birch found himself surrounded by more family than he knew what to do with.

Birch is a Nature dragon, but he has liked nothing better than joining in the festivities that is being a Wind dragon. His mate sometimes thinks he’s gone a bit crazy, but she, too, enjoys the cultural education they’ve been getting in the new venue. Birch is quite happy to know that his family is happy and entertained here, and actually quite enjoys the travel. Though it’s been confirmed a dozen times over his lifetime, Birch feels quite sure: he’s the luckiest dragon alive.

━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Birch’s Luna Mith friend, Pine, has been with him longer than Symphonia has. He’s got an odd sense of humor about him and the biggest, brightest eyes that Birch has ever seen, even for a Mith. Like Birch, Pine likes to study animals and collects insects. In fact, Pine is really more of an entomologist than a zoologist. He happily went along with Birch when he left to find his Charge, though he misses his old swarm. He was introduced to the nearby Mith community when they arrived on the Steppes where he fits in quite well, though he still spends the majority of his time with dragons.

━━ connections ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tarnished Cerdae Necklace Even though he now has an actual Charge, Symphonia is the first of his heart. They have been together as long as Birch can remember, and he knows they always will be. Her Charge, Eggplant, has been like a son to him, and he’s been quite happily content with this little family they’ve built together. He expects things will change between him, Symphonia, and Eggplant now that he has a charge on his own, but he has high hopes that they will settle in and get back to normal soon. Of course, they’re Wind dragons now. Normal is relative.

Birch has almost never been happier than the day he met his Charge, Medic. Even though she pointedly refused to share her real name (assuming she had one other than Medic), they hit it off almost immediately. Though she’s quiet, she’s friendly and accepting of the idea of being a Charge… perhaps because her mate is, too, a Guardian. Ček is, too, a pleasant Charge-in-law. In fact, he seems quite pleased that his mate is a Charge, knowing the importance Medic now has for Birch. Another layer of protection for loved ones is never a bad thing.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Birch happily took on the new surname Farflight once he settled in his new home.
»
» Even though Birch’s true interest remains zoology, he’s begun to dabble in his Charge’s hobby: botany.
