Do not let his Water eyes fool you - he is a creature of the night, at home with the shadows and spirits that writhe and cackle in the darkness. Or at least, that's what he'd like you to believe.

In truth, Neiji is an ordinary dragon who has a large interest in the occult. When he was younger he joined a “cult” that was really just a club for like-minded emos and goths, where they made mock-sacrifices to the Shade and wrote poetry about the shadows of the earth reflecting the empty darkness in their souls. Harmless, useless things really. His parents were always telling him he should leave the clan and go find a real job, but honestly Neiji was pretty happy as he was, staying up late at night and wearing dark clothing while he and his buddies fooled around with animal bones and bottles of Shadowbinder’s drool (which were most likely fake, but at the time they believed they were real).

Then one day he met Naoma, and everything changed.

He was on one of his midnight beach walks when he found her lying on the ground, half-conscious and covered with bruises. She was a fallen angel, with scales as dark as night and eyes of pure Light. Neiji was enraptured, and that was before Naoma revealed her origins: she was a great-great-granddaughter of the glitch queen Naomi herself, and she was fleeing from dragons who had wanted to use her bloodline’s powers for evil. It was like a protagonist from one of his favorite supernatural romance novels had come to life. Naturally Neiji leaped at the chance to help her, nursing her back to health and following her when she left (his parents, who didn’t believe any of Naoma’s stories, were just glad he was finally gone). After a series of perilous adventures, Neiji and Naoma finally found refuge in the Clan of Roaring Waters, where the Matriarch Radiance promised to protect them and help Naoma better understand her powers.

After surviving many real encounters with bounty hunters, dark mages, and shade-tainted monsters chasing after Naoma’s powers, Neiji now has a more grounded view of the supernatural. While he fully admits that it's real (he has seen Naoma use her erasing and creating powers too often to say it’s not) he is also fully aware of the dangers. He is still interested in the occult and dark magicks, but now his curiosity is purely scholarly – and he certainly doesn’t perform any more “Shade-summoning rituals.”

Over the course of their travels, Neiji and Naoma grew from being strangers, to friends, to lovers. Neiji is deeply committed to Naoma’s safety – he was the one who recommended hiding in the Sea of a Thousand Currents in the first place, believing that their enemies would have a harder time finding them underwater. When he isn’t helping Naoma practice her powers, he’s usually running errands for her when her migraines get too bad.

Neiji is a cheerful fellow, always quick to crack a smile or cheer up a gloomy clanmate. Still, many months of being hunted down by people after his mate have left their mark - he spooks easily, and loud noises and sudden movements will set him on guard. He loves doting on his "girls", namely Naoma and Ebony, the Ichor Nymph who joined them while they were passing through the Tangled Woods. He's struck up an odd friendship with Shadowlight, as both dragons have seen a lot of Sorneith over the course of their travels - the two like to swap stories of all the shady and fantastical places they've been to. Pyrope and Amphitrite have also become his friends - the two taught him how to knit, and Neiji finds the hobby oddly soothing. The fact that the Ridgeback's closest friends are all Faes has not gone unnoticed - there are many amused smiles when Neiji walks by, a gaggle of Faes clinging to his spikes. Neiji himself just appreciates the company.
