What makes a god, a god?
Ask a hatchling. He will tell you, eyes shining and eager, that it is strength, invincibility. Ask a clan elder, face lined with age, head still held proud and high, and they will say ‘sacrifice’. Ask an assassin, her claws stained with the blood of more than she can count; she will tell you that is is accountability.
Ask him. Ask him what it means to be a god and he will tell you in a voice that crackles and roars like a thunderstorm, with teeth like jagged metal, a tongue that is more ozone than flesh. He flies on wings made of prayers, faith so potent it is enough for him to take to the skies and sing the songs of the Stormcatcher.
Deities above, there are so many others like him. Perhaps he is only one of dozens of Stormcatcher clones, crafted to spread the storm’s influence as far as the eye can see. Maybe he is only a prayer written in the clumsy scrawl of a hatchling to a deity they will never meet; maybe he is just a sticky note that the Lightning deity breathed life into.
Ask him for the truth, though, and he will say—
Belief.
Borne from a bolt of lightning, it surprised no one that eventually it was he who took the hame of Lighting representative after Luther stepped down. A light nature made for an agreeable figure, taking great joy in learning about other, having traveled around to do just that. It always surprised him, how the same species of dragons could be so different, and the similarities piqued his interest just as much as the differences.
He hadn’t expected to find he would find a mate in his teacher, but their friendship came easily to the pair, spending more and more time together until the feelings roiled to the surface. He was unable to hide it, didn’t want to hide it, thinking it as a great disservice to the subject of all his amorous thoughts.
It was all perfect. His position, his mate by his side, a happy home and clan… He had been fulfilled with it all, except one thing that plagued him. Luther’s son. He desperately tried to get to know him, however much the skydancer wanted nothing to do with him. He tried constantly, promising himself that he would continue to try and get to know the other, not wanting to drive a wedge between father and son.
~~~
It had started off as a harmless joke, a small little jolt of lightning towards the skydancer. Honestly, he hadn’t meant anything malicious by it, but now after nearly an hour of the dragon’s mane sticking straight on end, he was anything but joking. He looked down his snout with an air of distaste, the effect ruined somewhat by the fact that he looked like he had just stuck a paw onto a lightning rod.
Aerie hadn’t imagined that it would affect the other so bad, especially considering that he was often using lightning magic himself. It was only afterwards that he had remembered that the other wasn’t very good at it either. He didn’t doubt that that was playing a role into the other’s steadily growing contempt for him.
The spiral tried to explain himself, that it was only meant to be a harmless little joke, but Luminosa was having none of it. He had turned on his tail and began to stalk back to his room, Aerie trying to get a word in edge wise, but all he managed to get out of the other was a loud slamming of the door to his quarters. The dragon sagged at the locked entrance, looking down at his talons with a soft sigh before picking himself up and going after Luther, wondering if the other would have any idea how to bond with the younger dragon.
