Biography

r5kFJCC.png

Another flower baby! This time, I took inspiration from the same family as her Mother! She is named after Solanum dulcamara or Woody Nightshade :3

She and her mother Belladonna are the watchers of Alduin and the clan witches. Amara is the clan's Shadow representative, chosen by Juniper and Eurydice because of her experience with the darker magics and the resistence she gets to them via bloodline. Raised solely by her mother, Amara has learnt how to avoid control of the darker forces by being strong in wit and forethought. She doesn't think much of her captive at all, especially after he destroyed her private library during his initial rampage for control. Amara views young Sexton favourably; the Skydancer spent time with the Lair’s mortician as a hatchling and helped him find a role within the Lair. She resents Zinnia for the way she talks about Alduin, warning her mother behind the other's back, but is civil enough to her in person. After all, Zinnia is her mother's apprentice, even if she's changed her appearance for seemingly no reason...?

She also has a cat named Cinnamon Toast Crunch (or Toastie for short). She loves cats and when she was younger she wanted a whole army of them. She couldn’t quite get her claws on an army, but a second one was doable (thanks willpower)!

If you look closely, little Salem the black cat is perched on Amara’s head.

Solanum dulcamara, also known as bittersweet, bittersweet nightshade, bitter nightshade, blue bindweed, Amara Dulcis, climbing nightshade, fellenwort, felonwood, poisonberry, poisonflower, scarlet berry, snakeberry, trailing bittersweet, trailing nightshade, violet bloom, or woody nightshade, is a species of vine in the potato genus Solanum, family Solanaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia, and widely naturalised elsewhere, including North America, where it is an invasive problem weed.

Solanum dulcamara has been valued by herbalists since ancient Greek times. In the Middle Ages the plant was thought to be effective against witchcraft, and was sometimes hung around the neck of cattle to protect them from the "evil eye".

John Gerard's 'Herball' (1597) states that "the juice is good for those that have fallen from high places, and have been thereby bruised or beaten, for it is thought to dissolve blood congealed or cluttered anywhere in the intrals and to heale the hurt places."

(Wikipedia)

Although this is not the same plant as deadly nightshade or belladonna (an uncommon and extremely poisonous plant), bittersweet nightshade is somewhat poisonous and has caused loss of livestock and pet poisoning and, more rarely, sickness and even death in children who have eaten the berries.
Fortunately, bittersweet nightshade has a strong, unpleasant odor, so most animals will avoid it, and poisonings from this plant are not very frequent.

The entire plant contains solanine, the same toxin found in green potatoes and other members of the nightshade family, and it also contains a glycoside called dulcamarine, similar in structure and effects to atropine, one of the toxins found in deadly nightshade. The toxin amount varies with soil, light, climate and growth stage. Ripe fruits are generally less toxic than the leaves and unripe berries, but even ripe berries can be poisonous.
