Biography

WUTARIO Life in the Tangled Wood never appealed to Wutario. The suffocating closeness of the canopy, the constricting tightness of the tree trunks, the eyes that followed you everywhere, staring and unblinking, even when you slept. In hindsight, maybe that’s why he struck out as he did- reaching as far as he possibly could, challenging himself to go higher and higher. The air was so much clearer up above. And he made so many memories out there. He came from the flames but the cold called, tugging at his heartstrings and leading his feet. When he climbed his first mountain, it was like taking his first step toward heaven. He frolicked like a hatchling for hours in the fresh snowfall, and then, because he had nothing better to do, he went exploring in the cave systems that arrowed and darted out of the mountainside. There were often such wondrous treasures hidden away in those tunnels: gems, stones, bones, artifacts from another time, another place. His love for adventure and traveling grew the more of these he found. He never kept the jewels, and the bones he gave away to museums. But the shiny, oddly shaped pebbles he kept for himself, lined up on a well-dusted shelf above his fireplace. The fireplace stayed cold, but the shelf never lacked for attention. It wasn’t just caves and mountains, either. His first taste of the outside led to an almost obsessive need for finding new places, new dragons, new worlds. His vibrant personality and ecstatic reactions to new foods made him famous among social circles, ones of which he wasn’t a part but his name was known all the same. He made friends with strangers easily, complimenting their creations, marveling at the landscape and trying his hand at their languages. This was often met with laughter and much shaking of heads, but he always had it mastered by the time he came back to visit. The bonds he made strengthened and grew. He never settled down, but made it his profession and his mission to see everything there was to see. Caving was his first love but the map he was making in his head and his heart was too big to contain to just one avenue. His rock collection grew, spreading from the shelf to the mantle to the windowsills to his headboard, the trinkets he was given on his travels filled up closets and spilled into hallways. He kept everything tidy, for he wasn’t a hoarder and didn’t like the clutter, but every piece meant something to him, and everywhere he went was an extension of home. |
