NECROPOLIS

LAWFUL GOOD

There's a joke in the Necropolis that Dendera was here long before you, and that he will be here long after you're gone. It's not really a joke. It doesn't even have a punchline. But treating it like one makes the truth easier to comprehend.

It's true Dendera has been here longer than any of the other inhabitants. He won't say how long exactly- not out of secrecy or caginess, but because he just doesn't seem to grasp time on the same scale as everyone else. Everything seems so much shorter for him, lives flicker in and out like candles, stone structures are built and crumble like sandcastles. Nothing lasts, nothing stays, but Dendera continues on. He's gotten rather zen about it all.

But if you press him, or at least ask very nicely, he'll tell you about the Necropolis before it was the Necropolis, before it was even a city really. According to him, back then, it was just a field. A wide expanse of dirt and rock and overly optimistic foliage, and it was here that the old dragons, too sick or too tired or just too frail to make the migratory paths around Sornieth were left behind. It was here that they waited to die.

He had been young then- or at least, he thinks he was young. It's almost as far back as he can throw his memory, and he cannot recall a time before the field and the abandoned not-quite-yet-dead, so he was at least young-er. He says he just watched them, for a while. But one can only watch so long before something must be done, and so, Dendera took to caring for them. Looking after them, bringing them water, building them crude shade from rocks and mud and whatever else might be flat and broad and useful.

It was the Pearlcatchers, he said, that really built the city. Snappers lacked the dexterity to utilize hammers and mortar- or perhaps they just never saw the use in such things, being nomadic in nature. But the Pearlcatchers had come in, and found the natural ways of death in Dragonhome to be "barbaric and cruel" (Though privately Dendera thought he'd done a rather good job of it, all things considered.). Necropolis was built in their own ways, quite literally on the bones of the old ways. And thus began the City of the Dead, and also the not-quite-yet-dead.

The city has since fallen from glory. Its mausoleums are overcrowded and its streets infested with ghosts and restless dead. But Dendera endures. He likes the quiet. He likes the peace. He liked the company and the bustle too, when there was company and bustle to be found in the city, but Dendera has always been the type to make do. He is content.

He still could not tell you what he is, or who he is, really. He's not a dragon, that much for certain. He might be a spirit, but he discards the idea as "too flighty." He might be a monster, and this he will concede, though he dislikes the connotations. For now, he is just Dendera, calm and eternal, for however long that eternity lasts.
