Biography
Cern
She didn't want to bring up the fact they'd both been different after that day. It went unspoken between them all.
Her nights were filled by racing that long tunnel, unable to escape, those unseen terrors at the edge of her heat vision. Mother finally took her to the healer who gave her herbs, but even that didn't fully chase away her nocturnal visions.
Alone and scared, she steeled herself and learned to put on masks. She protraied confidence when she felt none, and when alone, practiced gestures and situations so when they came up in company, she would be ready. Cern developed an aloof attitude: the world was here for her. Compliments were her due, and she took no attitude from others.
Some saw her as cold. Some as amazing. Some wanted to put her in her place, but she kept herself out of situations where they could corner her. Through it all she held her head high.
Only her mother knew how late she came to bed at night, exhausted from practicing through hundreds of what if situations.
Planned Outfit:
"The female who does not require validation from anyone is the most feared individual on the planet."

Fateful Evening
The twins looked at each other doubtfully as they passed into the deep shade of a massive tree. There was a lair at the base of the trunk, the entrance to which was in disrepair and cast suspect on the quality of living within. "We shouldn't be here." her brother said. Cern nodded.Their father shushed them. "It's fine, he's a friend!" He raised his voice. "Oleander, are you home? I've come with company!" "Company?" A voice said from within. A blue tundra poked his head out from the den and looked at the group of mirrors. "Ah, your kittens." He smiled, warm and open, but Cern shivered noticing his eyes were still cold. His glance flickered to her at the minute movement. "Do come in. Some of the others are already here." This is no good. Cern was wary. Reguardless of their feelings, the pair was herded into the den.
* ~ * ~ * ~ *
The group in the main room earned her instant distrust. There was a ridgeback who had a loud voice which hurt her ears, and a pearlcatcher who looked at her too long before a third dragon smacked him and refocused him to the business at hand. Father joined them, easily sliding into their ranks like he belonged with them. Their host was nowhere to be seen. Cern waited in a dark corner of the room, and when all seemed distracted, she carefully started inching her way out. Back up the hall towards the entry she went, all her senses alert on the group below. Their voices faded and she relaxed. Tense muscles finally uncoiled, and she was free to escape! Telling herself not to run, she hurried towards the exit. But the hall was longer than she remembered. The upward slope had leveled, and was curving. She backtracked, but couldn't find the exit tunnel, though she again found the group. The only other exit from the room went down deeper into the lair, and that wasn't right because she remembered standing next to the storage wardrobe the whole time. Back she went up the long tunnel, her quick steps stuttering into a run. Adrenaline coursed through her and she panicked, the weird shadows with their bizarre heat flickers sending her into a frantic flight. The hall had no end. She turned around. A dozen steps later she was back in the main room. The business here was winding down, the candles burned low. She'd been gone for hours, but not felt the passage of that time. Her brother came to her from the hall beyond, his heat signature flickering like the weird shadows. "What happened to you?" she demanded in a hushed voice. The look he gave her was new, more mature, more cold. She shivered but kept abreast with him as they left up the tunnel that so tortured her and stole hours from her life. The tunnel curved up and they emerged out into the night. Cern walked back home with a stranger. This dragon had been her brother, still looked like him and had his memories, but carried himself differently. He didn't speak with her on the trip back as they did on the way there. She didn't pursue conversation though, as she was busy looking at every deep shadow to see if anything was following them. She couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She slept alone and not well, spending hours staring into the shifting shadows outside the security of her home lair. |
Revelation
Years later her mother confessed to fighting off a rogue pearlcatcher that evening. Cern always believed the scratch marks were from the fight to drive off her no-good father. Upon finding out the truth her brother was moody and snarled about needing to protect them, but he'd been a child like Cern and there was nothing either were able to do at the time.She didn't want to bring up the fact they'd both been different after that day. It went unspoken between them all.
Aftereffects
Cern's abrupt independence from her twin left her reeling. Finding herself alone where he'd usually been together, forced her to grow up faster than she wanted. Where once they wrestled and chased, now she sat by herself stalking grass blades in the wind till a noise from unseen things would send her racing for then lair. Betrayal burned in her chest at being left to her own devises, and bitterness stirred when her brother sharply rebuked her approaches to rekindle their sibling bond.Her nights were filled by racing that long tunnel, unable to escape, those unseen terrors at the edge of her heat vision. Mother finally took her to the healer who gave her herbs, but even that didn't fully chase away her nocturnal visions.
