Lore: It is believed that these hardy dragons originated in Carrion Canyon. Mainly due to their unique diet, consisting mostly of bone fragments. When healthy, these scavengers have shiny ‘gems’ growing all over their body. Natives of Carrion Canyon usually have a diet consisting almost entirely of bone and have deep red osseous growths.

Dragons not native to Carrion Canyon usually have different colors of gems due to maintaining a mixed diet. Their gem color has also been shown to be affected by high concentrations of elemental energy. Painted Vultures from Tempest Spire usually have gem shaded in the aqua range due to the density of lightning there, while those of the Lightning Farm have slightly darker gems in the greyish-blue range. Painted Vultures with a healthy and mixed diet without high concentrations of elemental energy will usually end up with deep golden color gems.

The unique colors and patterns of their feathers are due to the Painted Vulture rubbing pigmented clays and dust into their feathers. They prefer a mix of dark blue-greens and dark reds. The richness of the colors are considered a social status symbol to others of the subspecies.

These dragon do well in almost any clan as they are very hardy creatures. The exception to this is environments with too much water. To combat this, natives of the stormy Tempest Spire started to rub colorful, synthetic oils onto their feathers instead of chalks and clays. They are very well suited to acting as a hunter or gatherer.

Other: This subspecies must have lightning eyes

The mother is from plague and was introduced into the clan for my clan leader/scientist to practice 'jumping the gap' between two branches of convergent evolution. (In other words, she had some traits of painted vultures but not all, and Scientist want to try to add those traits to her. After she was successful, Arid became very at home in the desert, taking to the wide open skies and the dry winds. She has a very ruthless character, being from plague originally, then experimented on, and now living a clan where success is the measure of one's worth. Her job is to lead the home guard (called the Sentinels). After her transformation, she hates leaving the desert (and is honestly a bit xenophobic.)

The male was originally a guardian. He was used as an experiment in taking unexpressed internal traits (he had some recessive painted vulture traits) and bringing them to surface. He frequently treats his mate as though she was his charge (she hates that) even though he isn't a Guardian anymore. Since transforming into a SD he has become addicted to trick-flying. He frequently pulls heart-stopping stunts. He still crashes pretty often, but everyone loves to watch him fly.

I see hatchlings of this pair going out into the world because there isn't enough resources to support them all. They get a crash course in combat and flight from their very demanding mother. Some hatchlings do not thrive in such a harsh environment, but some excel exponentially. No matter what, they all leave as exceptional flyers.
