Shadow Serpentskin
There is a group of dragons, the stuff of legend, that is said to take contracts for almost any sort of dirty work one can imagine. Espionage, assassination, the Night Court does it all. They are based in no one territory, have no one motivation, and have no secret signal to know each other by. The most skilled of this Court are the six Highnesses. Alistair is one of these elite courtiers - the Nightmare Prince.

Alistair seemed to be a rather lazy hatchling. While his brothers and sisters played among the Gladekeeper's vines and flowers, Alistair preferred to curl up in a shady patch and sleep. His caretakers despaired, assuming he was heading towards a life of idol frivolity. They couldn't have been farther from the truth.

In his sleep, Alistair found the ability to walk through a misty land. Sometimes he'd come upon other places in this land, their locations and meanings constantly changing. He found this place fascinating and did his best to slip away to it every chance he got. Whenever he told his caretakers about it, however, they laughed at him and said his dreams must be very vivid. Alistair persisted in saying it was real. Other hatchlings caught on and began to tease him about his dreams. He stopped talking about his dreams – stopped talking altogether, actually, and withdrew from clan life, seeking refuge in sleep.

He didn't realize quite what that misty land was until a traveling fortune teller passed through the Viridian Labyrinth where he grew up. Alistair watched with wide eyes as the teller drew him out from the crowd, flipped over a spread of cards, and softly told him that he had the latent ability to walk in the dreams of others. Alistair still remembers that day as the day his life changed – especially when, after dark, the fortune teller came back with a knife for his clan leader's chest and an invitation for Alistair to join the Night Court.

Eager for adventure, Alistair accepted. He began to control his forays into the misty world of dreams. He learned to use blank tarot cards, like the ones the fortune teller used, to draw the scenery he witnessed in order to immediately navigate back to a certain dragon's dreams. In time, he even managed to change the content of the dreams he walked in – turning pleasant sleep to nightmares, chasing dragons awake, revealing their innermost thoughts to his eyes.

Talents like these are useful in the Night Court. Information is a currency, and blackmail is one of the Court's services. Alistair quickly became known to the Majesties as the dragon to go to when a particularly difficult target needed to be blackmailed. On top of that, he became quite adept at assassinations and thievery, able to put entire clans into a deep sleep in order to complete his mission. For these talents, when a former Princess was killed on assignment, the Majesties offered Alistair a place as a Highness.

To his fellow Highnesses, Alistair is a rather quiet dragon. He only speaks up when he has something to add to the conversation at large, and can usually be found skimming the edges of any meeting, idly running his claws over the edges of a tarot deck. It was his talent for dark humor and his magical abilities that earned him his nickname, and Alistair happily answers to it.
