Shining Beacon (most commonly known as Shy) was born in Bluemist Dell ten minutes after his twin sister Midnight Reverie (Nightie). His parents were fairly well-off and happy to accept children. He and his sister grew up happily overall, with the average amounts of squabbles and scrapes. They were inseparable, though with Shining Beacon's natural shyness, his sister often took the lead in their games. Because of his Brand, from very young it was assumed that Shy would become some sort of cleric or paladin, and though his parents refused to force him, he took to that path readily - leaning more towards cleric.

However all that changed in early adolescence. Shy and Nightie had snuck out at night to seek adventure in the nearby forest. It was very dark, and though the moon was out when they started, before long it was obscured by the clouds. That didn't deter them though, and they tramped through the trees searching for the magical flower they'd heard about, that would grant the Moon Princess's blessing. They didn't find it, but something else found them.

Shy had tripped over an upraised root in the darkness, and when he got back to his feet, Nightie was gone. As he cast about trying to find her, a shriek broke the stillness of the night. He galloped towards the sound, only to find her in the grasp of some horrible, shadowy... thing. He charged it, and in its surprise, Nightie was able to break free, and the pair took off pell-mell for home, terrified (and in Nightie's case, injured).

After that incident, Shining Beacon never quite got over his fear of the dark. He still loved the quiet and stillness of the night and the harmony of the stars... it was just those creatures that hid themselves within that terrified him. Midnight Reverie was more resilient and bounced back more easily, determined for more adventures. Shy was equally determined to protect her where he had failed that night, and swerved from the path of the cleric into the path of the paladin. Never again would Nightie lack a protector, not when he could help it.
