______

______ Cloudsinger heavily leant against the wall of the cave. She was crawling through this tunnel for what felt like ages, but she felt that she was at the end of her stamina. It was one thing to concoct this tour all by herself, and an entirely other to execute it perfectly. She didn’t expect her map to be outdated, and so it came as a surprise that several tunnels she planned to go through were blocked by rubble.

Her pearl coloured wings were snuggly tucked against her back to not hinder her movements, but they were still covered in soot and grime. She fluffed them up to shake off at least the top layer of it, successfully creating a cloud of dirt. She refrained from cussing as she sneezed several times.

“Agh, blimey,” she sullenly sprawled down on the floor and opened her bag to rummage around it.

The map she took out was wrinkled and old, but it was visibly treated carefully – a corner glued back, the edges well-worn and soft to the touch.
It was a map of the legendary lost cavern her ancestors lived in once, but ever since the volcano became dormant hundreds of Moon ago, the place was abandoned, and eventually forgotten. Cloudsinger was determined to find the hub, to investigate her roots and document her findings to the society.

She sighed and folded the map once again after denoting her position on it with ink. She had to admit to herself: after hours of searching the place, she didn’t find anything, not even a single mouse or bats. It was eerie. Surely her uncle was now looking for her worried sick, and for that she felt sorry for not telling him about her departure. It was a silly idea, so-so foolish of her to think she could just casually stumble upon ancient ruins.

She got up, fixing herself with a cleansing breath, and set out back home. She followed the path she came from, her footprints visibly standing out in the dirt. Oh, she could just imagine the scolding she’d get from uncle Coppertongue. What did I tell you about daydreaming?, he’d ask, and she would recite the answer of That I should get my head out of the clouds because I wasn’t named after them for this reason. She huffed irritably. Stupid caves and stupid uncles.

Speaking of which, didn’t she have to take a turn right about now? No, she definitely remembered that there should be a tunnel leading to the outside to the left. Anxiety tickled her mind, and she hurriedly snatched the map. “Oh, Flamecaller, oh lord mighty,” she chirped, feathers drooping down, “I’m lost.”

Cloudsinger panicked. She almost dropped the map as she hurriedly turned to find an intersection she was familiar with, but it was a lost cause. She let out anxious humming sounds, a call for help every coatl knew. The deeply vibrating tune resonated off the walls, echoing through the tunnels.

Suddenly she stopped, her humming cut off as she listened keenly. A… melody? Yes, it was a song, so gorgeous her heart constricted with passion, blood coursing through her veins with the need of closer closer closer. She had to find it.

She spread her wings, flapping them to get them accustomed to movement again, and she didn’t even feel the scrape of the rocks on them as she darted to the air. She wanted to call out, to let the voice know she was coming, just a second, a moment and she’ll be there, but her throat constricted, air almost completely cut off by the emotional turmoil she felt. She forgot about her uncle, about magically disappearing routes, because only the voice mattered which filled her head and reached into her core.

The voice became louder and louder, its sound slipping into an angelic octave. Tears of joy sprung into her eyes.

“I’m here!”, she gasped, rocketing into a wide cavity. Her senses immediately were attacked by fire illuminating the walls from an invisible source. One could have thought the volcano awoken again with hellish light and warmth.

In the middle of it sprawled the most beautiful coatl Cloudsinger has ever seen. His huge wings spread majestically around him like a golden halo, eyes like molten amber fixated on her. He sung without opening his maw, the humming sounds visibly resonating in his chest and throat.

A handsome smile blossomed on his lips as he hold out the last note, and Cloudsinger felt warmth bloom in her heart. She hurriedly cast her eyes to the ground, a pinkish tinge crawling up her neck.

And oh, that voice, like the nectar of the Gods. “My eyes must be deceiving me, for seeing such beauty lighting up my cave must be magic.” He bowed his head with a chuckle, wings towering over her small frame. “My name is Goldengrace, young dame. Would you care to join me for the night?”

Cloudsinger awkwardly mimicked the bow, nodding furiously. He’s royal blood, she thought dreamily as she extended her arm to accept Goldengrace’s hand. “Yes, yes, of course.” Whatever you want, she thought, and she heard the music again, the wondrous sounds and marvellous humming which made her so happy inside.

As Goldengrace led her deeper into the cavern she failed to notice the bones and skulls littering the floor…
