Spix's Macaw
Critically Endangered/Extinct In The Wild

The Spix's Macaw, or Little Blue Macaw, is the rarest macaw in the world, with an estimated wild population of less than fifty. The most recent wild sighting was of a single individual in June of 2016 in the small Brazilian town of Curaçá. These birds were, in fact, the inspiration for the animated Dreamworks movie Rio, where the last two male and female of this species face greedy poachers, different pasts, and each other's personalities as challenges in the way of saving their species.

Poaching, habitat loss, and capture for the pet trade are the causes for this bird's disappearance. As of 2015, there are 100 registered birds in captivity around the world. Some are in private collections, some in reservations and zoos, and others as individual pets. There may be many more birds that have not been registered by the Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots (ACTP).

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW OWNS A SPIX'S MACAW, ALERT YOUR LOCAL ZOO, WILDLIFE RESERVE, OR THE ACTP DIRECTLY. IT IS CENTRAL TO THIS ANIMAL'S FUTURE THAT AS MANY LIVING BIRDS AS POSSIBLE ARE KEPT IN PROFESSIONAL CARE AND MAY HELP REBUILD THEIR TINY POPULATION.

Ways To Help:

Purchase wood that is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This greatly reduces your effects on sensitive forests.

Avoid using products that contain palm oil or palm kernel oil. Palm oil farms are a main cause of deforestation in sensitive tropical areas. These can range from food to make-up products. ALWAYS check what's in your products. Palm oil can be in anything.

Never purchase items made from macaw parts. Poaching is the enemy of any wild organism.

If you see a Spix's Macaw or Spix's Macaw parts/eggs for sale anywhere, DO NOT purchase it. Alert the appropriate authorities if possible.
