Mortimer hails from a diverse Plague clan with no shortage of skilled warriors, one of whom is his father. Between his genetics, his breed, and his home flight, Mortimer was pretty much destined to become a warrior of some sort, and he happily answered the call when Freida began advertising that the clan needed more than a Coliseum team to defend the clan’s growing population. When he arrived, he was apprenticed to the Guardian Leviathan, who was a fearsome warrior but rather lacking in the mentorship department. He was harsh, hostile, and unforgiving in his training—fortunately, though, Mortimer had expected as much of protection training and did not become resentful of his mentor. Because of Leviathan’s own past, he put forth a policy of no weaponry in training until Mortimer proved himself capable of fighting with his fangs and claws alone. The Guardian was pleasantly surprised at how well Mortimer was able to hold his own, however—he never truly became friendly toward his apprentice, but he did gain a healthy respect for him. As a result, Mortimer is one of the few dragons in the clan that Leviathan willingly speaks to.

Upon the formation of the Lupines, an exclusive task force devoted to addressing threats within clan borders, Mortimer was officially made a full-time warrior with no need for a mentor. As crucial to clan safety as the Lupines were, the Wildclaw still found himself bored in between missions—so, naturally, he began visiting Leviathan in the armory. There, he discovered that he quite enjoyed crafting weapons from wood and stone, while Leviathan preferred forging metals. The Guardian seized the opportunity to put another dragon in charge of handling orders and dealing with clients, so he could be at the forge full-time, and actually offered to mentor Mortimer in the practice of weapon-making. Thus, Mortimer is now both a Lupine warrior and the face of the clan’s armory. He cares for his clanmates’ weapons stored in the armory, and doesn’t have a separate area for creating like Leviathan does—he’s often carving away in plain sight of customers and clanmates. Since his partnership with Leviathan, the armory has become surprisingly profitable, as the Wildclaw is much more willing to welcome custom orders from the clan’s merchants.

RELATIONSHIPS
Leviathan has been Mortimer’s mentor twice in life, and is currently his senior business partner in the clan’s armory when Mortimer is not on duty with the Lupines. While neither Leviathan nor Petra were the teaching sort, the clan’s main trainer, Sylvanas, was busy with providing basic combat training to other members of the guard. Of the pair, Mortimer chose Leviathan, despite his harsh methods of teaching and overall hostility. After the Lupines were established he no longer trained exclusively under the Guardian, but the pair maintained mutual respect for one another—enough that Leviathan actually went out of his way to make Mortimer his apprentice again, this time in the armory. The two share an odd friendship that is mostly comprised of silence and knowing glances. Despite Leviathan’s grumpiness, Mortimer knows that the Guardian is appreciative of him.

TRIVIA
Yzgnhz6.png
» Etymology: Mortimer (pr. MORE-tih-mur) is a name of Norman (Latin and Norse languages) origin, meaning “dead sea.” Named after the protagonist of the play Arsenic and Old Lace by American writer Joseph Kesselring.

» Familiars: Tricolor Viperpillar

» General Trivia: Mortimer’s intimidating style of dress is more homage to his birth clan than a warrior’s guise, but he secretly likes the attention and respect he gets in response to his ferocious looks.
Aside from Sylvanas, the clan’s designated combat instructor, Mortimer is the most approachable of the warriors personality-wise—the others are either conceited, hostile, intensely serious, or all three.
He’s oddly susceptible to flattery, given how accustomed he is to harsh training and being criticized; he has a thick skin when it comes to disapproval, but flattery will knock him off of his paws.
He has a natural desire to be productive, hence his willingness to take on two jobs—his form of relaxing is taking on custom projects, and he can often be found whittling away on the beach when he isn’t in the armory or at a Guard base.
