Biography
MORDRED
NIGHT COURT MAGE
Enigma
|
There is a group of dragons, the stuff of legend, that is said to take contracts for almost any sort of dirty work one can imagine. Espionage, assassination, the Night Court does it all. They are based in no one territory, have no one motivation, and have no secret signal to know each other by. The only ones who know the identities of all the courtiers at any given time are the four Majesties, who live in the Shaded Palace, hidden from any danger. Mordred serves these Majesties and the Court as a whole with his magical talents.
Mordred hatched alone. He's sure he had parents, and his coloring isn't that of a dragon created solely from magic, but he had nobody looking on as he clawed his way out of his egg. The only things in his surroundings were a shriveled and lifeless egg, an already-broken eggshell, and the pink crags of an Arcane nest. Practically helpless and unsure what else to do, Mordred stumbled out of his egg and began to walk. He wasn't sure quite what it was, but something was drawing him in a particular direction – some assurance that he'd be safe if he just kept walking in that direction. When he came to a sheltered cave, the hatchling Mordred ducked inside, somehow certain that he could rest here. The prickle of magic washed over his skin. Mordred relaxed. Somehow, this was a familiar sensation, one he'd felt many times before even though he'd only been in this world for a few hours. He fell asleep in the entrance of the Shaded Palace, and that is how Ekaros found him – a lone hatchling, still sticky from the residue of his egg, peacefully snoring on the stone floor. Ekaros wasn't sure what to do, for once in his long life, so he picked the small hatchling up with pearl-gentle care, and took him to the Majesties After a brief debate – the Queen of Poisons wanting to kill him immediately, the Kings of Secrets and Blades curious about how he got past the wards, and the King of Plots silent in the corner – they decided to keep him, at least until they heard what he had to say. When Mordred woke, it was to the sensation of hunger, and four pairs of curious eyes looking down at him from the shadows of cowls and the sharpness of scars. He was confused at first. This wasn't the safety he'd sought, and yet, the magical energies around him felt familiar. What was happening? He didn't quite know. He tried to explain that he'd felt safe walking this direction, and that he was hungry and he didn't know who any of these dragons were, but none of his words seemed to come out right and he eventually gave up from exhaustion. After another hushed conference, the Majesties decided to keep him and train him as he grew up. If nothing else, he could become a loyal courtier. Mordred gave the name he instinctively knew to be correct, and was rewarded with food and a soft bed in which to sleep. His training, he was told, would start when he grew bigger. But he never grew bigger. Though his mind continued to develop to the point of an adult dragon, Mordred retained the size and shape of a hatchling. At this point, the Majesties were well and truly confounded. Mordred eventually managed to convince them that he was an adult inside this tiny body, and that he could still be useful with his powerful magical skills. He patched up holes in the wards which Ekaros couldn't fix, renewed the charms on the Palace to keep it hidden and safe, and even created a new little spell which would heat the Shaded Palace in the winter and cool it in the summer. And after yet another spirited debate, the Majesties decided to allow Mordred to stay and even gave him his own small room. Mordred is, for all intents and purposes, the Shaded Palace's resident mage. He identifies and solves magical problems the Court comes up against, and if a particular charm is needed, Mordred is usually able to figure out how to create it and preserve it for use by a non-magically-inclined dragon. He doesn't know where he gets all this knowledge from. He just knows that some problems instinctively make sense to him, as if he's seen them before, and others are quite simple if he just thinks about them for a bit. His den is filled with magical paraphernalia and all the books he can get his claws on. His personality tends toward the sarcastic and lofty. He gets along with Ekaros mainly because Ekaros doesn't speak, and rubs almost every other Majesty the wrong way. Mordred reminds Ekaros uncomfortably of someone he used to know – a Queen, back when his body was new and his creator was still alive, when ten out of eleven Shaded Palaces hadn't been built yet. But Ekaros doesn't want to think about the possibilities of that, nor of that painful time, so he puts it out of his mind and goes about his business. It's no matter, really. There's no need for Mordred to know that he has a sister – or that she's a Princess of the Night Court. |
