Cast out by his family for his proclivity towards dark magic, Arastu spent years in the slums. Malnourished and often bloodied, he wasn't much to look at when he was young, but he was STRONG.
Carolus eventually preyed on that strength, and his desperation to belong. By giving him, and the other Necromancers Arastu inevitably attracted, a place to "belong", he gained their loyalty.
Arastu wasn't stupid
Ruling through fear and power was no way to rule. Just because under Carolus the Necromancers could walk in daylight with their heads high didn't mean they were accepted. it meant they were feared.
And they deserved better than that.
The whole damn kingdom deserved better than Carolus.
So Arastu slithered like a shadow into the game Icarus had begun to play, staking his bet on the King-to-be
