Vali doesn't talk much about his past, but the dragons who were around to see him arrive at Clan Clarion's doors do. He showed up at the doors to the heavily guarded doors of an icy fortress in the dead of a Southern Icefield winter, wearing nothing but an ancient, ragged fur and accompanied by a Kelpie almost as big as he was. This, combined with his fearsome, four-horned silhouette, made the matter of his staying with the clan a fierce debate. However, once he proved his usefulness as a scribe, he was reluctantly allowed to remain. What Vali has since done could be described as somewhere between 'making a nuisance of himself' and 'causing a spectacle'. He never seems to try to do this; trouble follows him everywhere, mysteriously excepting the library where he works. He's sarcastic at times, completely oblivious at others, and seems to carefully study the rules in order to systematically break each one in a more outrageous way than the last. Despite all this, he's considered charming, and while he's lazy in a lot of ways, he works hard for the mages. When he arrived at the lair, Vali immediately became a shameless flirt, and has remained so to this day. Male, female, or otherwise, he tries it on with nearly every dragon in the clan, as well as any visitors. It has made him plenty of friends (most of whom don't take him too seriously), but rarely does anyone ever reciprocate any genuine interest. The more time goes by, the more desperate his overtures seem, but only those closest to him ever really get to notice the change. As well as his scribe work, he's shown himself to have a remarkable grasp on magic, particularly the ice magic of his birth. However, he's been noticed using another kind of magic, too, one that doesn't seem to match any conventional magic of the eleven flights, or even Shade. When asked, he states, "It's just magic." No one but Sephiroth has been able to learn any more; he offered him an exchange of knowledge, arcane for whatever that indescribable, antielemental magic was. Behind closed doors, Vali showed him, but Sephiroth couldn't copy it exactly. Vali, on the other hand, picked up basic arcane magic with little apparent effort. Perhaps because of all this, Vali is often the one to welcome new members into the clan. Somehow, he always seems to be around when they turn up, and he knows every inch of the expansive lair and the lands beyond. It seems strange but explainable to most of his clan mates, but Sephiroth has suspicions that Vali isn't all that he seems. Vali's well aware of the rumors, but shows no inclination to confirm or deny them. "What does it matter? A dragon's a dragon. Isn't it?" Lately, Vali's started to look a little odd. Well, odder. No one particularly likes to question it, but he doesn't look very comfortable with these new wings. His favourite apparel no longer fits him, for a start. And why won't his eyes focus anymore? What are those dark patches creeping across his feathers? What's happening to him? |
