Vatra and Brand. Brand and Vatra. The twins have always had a deep bond. From a young age, they moved as if controlled by one mind. Brand would bump a dish off of a table and Vatra would whirl and catch it on its way down. Even in their first few years, the twins felt detached from their homeland and their family. There was the family and then there was The Family. One referred to the twins' parents, Dusk and Twilight. The other referred to the mismatched and unusual crew that ran The Silent Crow, the grand old trading post where the twins' parents lived.

Of course, in those first few years, Vatra and Brand never left the constant, ethereal twilight of the Tangled Wood, but they did hear tales of other lands. Once, Marie, the resident...well, she preferred "collector" to anything else, came back from a market day with a cart of heavy, hardcover books. Chisai, the head of The Family, took a few select volumes and tucked them away somewhere, but most of them were catalogued and then sold. Only one was left out of the haul. Marie had noticed that the twins never seemed quite at home. They were always asking Generosity, the exiled noble from the Sunbeam Ruins, for tales of his youth and days at court. They seemed to pounce on any scrap of knowledge or any story of the outside world as if their lives depended on it. Marie has always been good at noticing things. In her line of work, such a skill is more of a necessity. In any case, the small Tundra took the twins aside and slipped them a book off of the cart. "One less book isn't going to make a difference," she whispered with a smile.

Undoubtedly, it was that very book that led Vatra and Brand down the path that they ended up choosing, the path that would become their lives. It was a history book, filled to bursting with wondrous descriptions of foreign lands. The twins stayed in their room more than ever and poured over the pages, soaking in the old wars and new treaties, the politics of the Sunbeam Court, the quiet, precise dignity that the Southern Icefield was known for and everything in between. It was always the Southern Icefield that few the twins' interest. It was a funny thing, considering their inexcusable ties to fire and all it represents, but the boys have always been fascinated with all things cold and still.

Most young dragons squirm and protest and put up quite a ruckus when Eloise rounds them up for market day. Their behavior is not entirely unjustified, but the quiet ones are often the ones that find better apprenticeships at the markets. Eloise always does her best to find safe, reputable positions for her young apprentices, but there is no guarantee, no certificate, no promise of a safe, honest life. Still, the twins went quietly. It was part of their plan. Anyone could recognize that they were a striking duo, handsome in a solemn, silently intense way. In fact, they were the first to go. A female Pearlcatcher with a soft voice payed their apprenticeship fee to Eloise, and off they went. The Pearlcatcher, whose name was Elle, proved to be very motherly and gentle with her new batch of apprentices. The twins made the long journey to the Ashfall Waste, along with Elle and two other new apprentices.

The Ashfall Waste was hot and unforgiving terrain by nature, but the twins enjoyed it in their quiet way. Vatra found an interest in metalworking for the clan he had been apprenticed into and while the forge and tools held no charm for Brand, he took a great liking to working with glass. The boys progressed so quickly that their new clan decided that they had worked off their apprenticeship after only two years. They were free to do as they liked. They could stay and become full clan members, or leave and seek out a new place to live. The decision was silent. Neither spoke, but both knew exactly what was going to happen, exactly what they were going to do. They said their goodbyes and headed straight for the Southern Icefield.

Since setting up shop in the land of ice, where the snow sucks the noise from the air, Vatra has found his voice. Since joining yet another clan and setting up his forge and metalworking shop, he has become more confident, more outgoing and even has his eye on a particular clanmate who often stays at his workshop until closing. The armor and weaponry that Vatra produces, while not known for being particularly pretty, are always solid, strong and sturdily crafted. For true work adornments, his is the only local workshop to visit. The Silent Crow may have moved on with its dealings and The Family may have closed the gap that the twins' left, but Vatra will not forget his homeland any time soon. Marie still makes appearances in his dreams, her green eyes dancing with the light of suppressed smiles, that old history book often presented in her claws.
