Gladiolus

Demigod Of War
Many thousand moons ago, long before the dawn of The Salainen, the Gladekeeper and the Shadowbinder clashed in a great, ferocious battle to determine the territory boundary for their underlings. Shadowbinder had decided to expand his elemental land by taking the neighbouring nature forest, but Gladekeeper refused to give it away easily; it would have to be claimed by force. It was an evenly matched fight with no clear winner, and both dragons were taking heavy damage.

From this anger, pain and suffering, a demon was born. Gladiolus, a demigod of extreme power and malice, was created from one of Shadowbinder’s scales, ripped from his body by Gladekeeper. He was barely sentient at first, only heeding to his dark master’s orders. But as Shadowbinder began to lose interest in his minion, time granted this beast a sense of free will. Without a duty or purpose, he lurked deep in the Forest of Wraiths for centuries, awaiting the time he would be called upon again.

That time never came, and Gladiolus grew increasingly restless. He would kill trespassers without mercy, and curse those who disrespected the balance of the forest with strong hexes and spells. The early Salainen settlers were no exception, and when the scientist Opalite came prying into his territory and refused to leave, Gladiolus cursed the dragon to be slowly consumed by vines. From that moment forward, he was seen as an enemy to the Salainen, and when the society had rooted itself Apollo swiftly constructed an army to protect them from the looming threat - The Garrison.

However, Gladiolus had no intention of attacking the new colony unless they threatened the Forest of Wraiths. Despite his neutrality, The Garrison still encroached his territory, leading to many innocent dragons meeting their demise at his claws. But instead of fearing the dragon’s power like everyone else, the newly-appointed leader of The Garrison, Roxo, was impressed by the emotionless killer, and wanted to capture Gladiolus to keep as his servant. Roxo assumed that he would be able to defeat the demon, but that was a drastic miscalculation; his soldiers were slaughtered almost immediately, and he was easily taken down. On him Gladiolus cast his cruellest, most powerful curse - to be slowly ripped apart by vines - then left the leader for dead on the forest floor.

He did not expect anyone to plead for Roxo’s life, but his estranged brother, Rook, visited him with the intention of making a deal. Gladiolus was taken aback by this absurd, pitiful suggestion and immediately refused, demanding that the mage leave immediately or else suffer under the same curse as his sibling.

Going against all odds, Rook saved his brother anyway, and earned a sliver of respect from the demigod. So when the mage was exiled from the Salainen, Gladiolus begrudgingly agreed to let him coexist within the Forest of Wraiths with him - as long as their paths rarely crossed.
