Biography

Amala hated fighting Greatshells. They were tough, and stubborn, and always took a great deal more effort than she expected. But they emerged victorious, although tired, and approached the corpses to see what could be salvaged from the fight. Brer was carefully slicing away at a fin, which would make a tasty meal for some hatchlings, and Lysiae was poking around at the inside of a shell to see if there were any precious stones or other baubles tucked away inside. Amala turned the nearest body over and started prodding at some of the meaty bits. Then she jumped back as one eye rolled open and fixed her with a surprisingly intense glare.

"What is it?" Brer asked, attracting the attention of Lysiae as well, who moved away from the shell and towards Amala.

"Nothing," Amala replied. "This one isn't dead yet. He startled me, that's all."

Lysiae moved up next to her and looked down at the Greatshell, lying prone but glaring at them as if in warning. "It must have just passed out," she said. "Do you want me to finish it off?"

Amala scowled. "You can't honestly expect me to let you kill a defenseless creature, can you?"

Lysiae shrugged and moved away. "It's better than leaving him here for the sea birds to pick off, isn't it? I'm sure he'd rather die quickly than slowly, dying of thirst while they peck out his eyes."

Amala looked back down at the Greatshell. He was still glaring at her. Even defeated, he was not about to show her that she'd broken him. She couldn't just kill a fighter like that. "I'm going to take him home," she announced.

Lysiae snorted. "Well you can carry him yourself. If you think you can manage that shell."

Amala looked to Brer, who had finished cutting off the choicest bits of meat. He looked back at her for a moment, staying quiet. Then he sighed. "You really aren't going to give up, are you?"

Amala stood over the Greatshell as if he were her own hatchling. "No."

And, ignoring Lysiae's eye rolls, the large imperial helped lift the injured Greatshell up as the three warriors flew back to their lair.

The Greatshell was healing nicely, although he still didn't like Amala, but she still didn't know what to do with him. She had her own familiar, who had just started perching on her shoulder while she rested in the evenings, but she knew that if she didn't do something then Lysiae would become unbearable. For the clan matriarch, she could be almost as difficult as a rowdy hatchling.

Amala was pondering this when she almost ran into Shimmer's son, Maximos. He was fully grown, but not yet ready to breed, and while he had about as much energy as her own son, Choro, he was much more interested in helping everyone with any errands or chores they had to do than causing mischief. "Where are you going in such a hurry?" she asked him.

"I was just...well. Lucio is redecorating his berth again and he asked if I wanted to help, so I was just out getting some pretty stones and flowers and things to help him out..." Maximos shifted a little, and Amala narrowed her eyes.

"He's making Oriali another gift, isn't he?"

Maximos didn't say anything, but the look on his face said it all. Amala shook her head. "Well. If you'll take a break from that, I have a very important job for you. You can leave that silly beast to his own devices for a while. Come with me."

Maximos followed her dutifully back to her own berth, where she found the Greatshell snapping at her own Mith, who was fluttering just out of reach. She scolded him as her Mith flew behind Amala's wings, poking her little head out as if to taunt the Greatshell. He just glared at both dragon and familiar.

"I brought this temperamental thing back from the Sandswept Delta, but he doesn't like me very much," Amala said. "You can make friends with just about anything that moves. Would you mind trying with this irritable thing?"

Maximos advanced curiously, but slowly enough so as not to scare the Greatshell. He, for his part, shifted his glare to the young dragon, but didn't make as if to snap at him. "I'm Maximos, but you can call me Max, if you want," Maximos tried. The Greatshell didn't say anything, he just kept glaring. But Maximos was persistent. "If you want, you can come with me. It must be a little crowded in here, with the three of you. But there's plenty of room in my berth."

The Greatshell glared between Maximos and Amala, but then he nodded, slowly. It was more communication than he'd ever given Amala. She watched in amazement as it followed Maximos out of her berth and down the tunnel, listening to the young dragon's steady supply of friendly chatter all the way. She reached one claw up to rub her Mith's side, gently. "Well," she said. "Either they'll be friends soon, or that Greatshell will run away in a week. What do you think?"

The Mith chirruped out her light, ringing laughter and flew away. Amala nodded thoughtfully. Young Maximos was definitely the right dragon for that job. If he couldn't get that Greatshell to soften up, nobody could.

Teardrop Lapis Lazuli Pendant

Nobody was surprised when Maximos first started wearing a piece of Brer's lapis jewelry. The young bogsneak was so helpful and friendly to everyone, it made sense that he'd eventually earn a piece. The question was, how? It was almost impossible to keep track of how many good deeds and helpful things he'd done, and soon the topic was one of popular discussion. Even Shimmer didn't know what exactly had earned him that right, so eventually she asked. At first Maximos seemed reluctant to tell, but eventually he admitted that Brer had gotten a painful splinter that he couldn't pull out, and Maximos had finally been able to pull it out himself. Shimmer could hardly believe that this story was true, and didn't spread it to the rest of the clan, instead trying to figure out the true reason, but Brer is impossible to get any information from, so without confirmation or denial, it remains a mystery.
