Symmes used to be a sailor, traveling the seas and rivers of Sorneith with his friend Leo, having adventures, and getting into general trouble. After one too many close calls prompted the realization that neither of them was getting any younger, they both decided to hang up their sailor hats and settle down about as far from water as you can get. That meant Square Toe. That's why Leo wanted to settle down, at least. It's not that Symmes doesn't share a wish for a peaceful life, but he does have an ulterior motive for wanting to get away from the ocean. One of Symmes' last voyages was a routine cargo run across the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The route was easy, the sea was calm, and there wasn't much for the sailors to do except watch for pirates and keep the ship on course. Symmes took the opportunity to 'fish', or to nap with a line tied to his paw, hoping that he'd be woken up with a snack. He snagged a few little fishes, a lot of seaweed, and a pair of boots. He ate the fish and threw everything else overboard, although not before trying the footwear on. You don't waste a pair of good boots, after all. Symmes' luck was bad that day. The boots were not only a size too big, they were cursed. A long time ago, another sailor drowned in that same sea. The fish ate his body and the water rotted his clothes, but his spirit lived on in a pair of waterproof boots. By putting them on, Symmes was unknowingly inviting the ghost to attach itself to him. When Leo suggested retirement, Symmes was the one who wanted to make tracks for the desert. Of course, they picked possibly the only town in the Highland Scrub where it's possible to fish for a living. And Symmes' haunt hasn't given up. |
