History
Cyclonas was hatched during his clan's transition to the Cloudscape Crags, quite literally. His mother flew with his egg wrapped up in her claws, and the fae's first memory is peeking around the scarf and seeing the wide expanse of the Icefields beneath him. He began flying quicker than most, braving the blustering winds just so he could see the sparkling ice and tiny trees that were just dots on the ground. His father affectionately called him his little cyclone, and the name stuck almost immediately.

It was during this trip that he became interested in medicine.

Cyclonas still was too small to fly ahead with the other children, so he stayed behind with the main pack of adults and elders. He flitted around from dragon to dragon, asking questions and digging curiously through their bags, until the clan healer had enough of his antics and took him on a herb-gathering trip with her. Cyclonas loved it. Later, he helped her sort her medicines while she told him what each could do. He spent the rest of the trip by her side, eventually going on to become her apprentice.

Trivia
  • His favorite snack is caterpillars
  • Has a small scar on his face from a dare
  • He loves to try new things
  • Has a deadly fear of chickens
  • Likes collecting pretty shells and flowers and bits of ocean glass when he travels. His nest is festooned with these keepsakes and baubles whose value is purely sentimental (Thanks Tharn!)

Icewarden's Wrath

The blizzard came out of nowhere.

"Do you have the wraps?" shouted Althea. The piebald imperial crouched outside the door to the healer's hut, the vials of medicine tied to her wings clattering against each other in the unforgiving wind.

"Yeah, yeah, gotcha." Cyclonas stuffed the linens into the satchel at his side. He glanced around; the panicked flaring of his Opal sent shadows skittering across the walls. "I think that's everything from in here, Thea."

The imperial said something back, but Cy couldn't heard her over the roar of the wind. "I'm coming out!" he shouted.

It took a bit of maneuvering, but Cy managed to get out the door and crawl over to his mentor. He scrambled up her back and found his perch in her mane. "What now?"

"We must get to the shelters," she said grimly.

"Oh." Cyclonas twisted his claws in her hair. "That's kinda far, isn't it?"

"It's the safest place, away from the winds." Cy felt rather than saw Althea prepare to move. The gentle imperial shifted her weight, shaking off the crystals of ice that had formed on her forelegs and wings. "Hold on tight, Cyclonas. This will be a rough trip."

Wind and snow assailed the pair from every direction. Cy squeezed his eyes closed and buried his head in his mentor's thick mane. Ice collected on his sensitive frills and he had to flick them every few seconds just to keep the feeling in them.

The imperial made several leaps across the ice. Cyclonas clutched tight to her hair, fingers cramped and numb. Thea slid across the final iceberg, claws digging into the snow for purchase. "Somebody, open the door please! It's Althea and Cyclonas!"

Cy lifted his head. He squinted at the ground where the ice had begun to shimmer almost imperceptibly. A portal opened and Barnes' face appeared in it. "Get in here, you two! You shoulda been here a half hour ago!"

Cy forced his claws to unclench. He crawled down Althea's leg and dropped into the hole, where he was met with a much-needed rush of warmth.

"We had to gather our supplies," Althea explained, squeezing into the shelter too. The imperial had to hug her wings close to her body to fit. "Who else is here?"

"Everyone, I think. We were just holdin' out for the two of you, and the rest of 'em are down below."

"Can you believe this storm?" Feeling was returning to Cy's wings already. He looked around, noted the fiery skydancer in the corner who was giving off all the heat, and crept closer to him. "I don't know if I've ever been in one this bad before!"

"Yeah, well, you don't need to sound so excited about it," the skydancer grumbled. "Impetus was supposed to take me to the Coliseum tonight, you know, just the two of us. I guess that's not happening now."

"Oh, that's it!" Barnes turned and looked at the pair of them. "Impetus's your mentor, isn't he, Kairos? Be a doll and ask him to check up on these bolts when he gets the chance." He gestured around himself. "I don't want one of 'em coming loose when we need it, a'ight?"

Cy stretched out his senses. Yes, he could feel the metal bolts screwed deep into the iceberg and the chains that anchored it to the mainland. The safehouse was the go-to shelter in bad storms like this for protection against the winds.

"Yeah, sure, I can do that," said Kairos, seeming to perk up. His good mood vanished as the iceberg gave a particularly violent groan and rattled against its chains.

Cy shrunk back from the walls. His Opal dimmed. Maybe this storm was gonna be worse than he thought. He shivered. Just as long as the iceberg didn't make a noise like that again, he could stay calm.

But of course things never went the way he wished. The iceberg shuddered again, this time more violently. Cy lost his balance and would have crashed into the wall if Kairos hadn't grabbed his tail. "What's happening?" he shouted.

"I don't know!" Barnes shouted back. "The iceberg shouldn't be actin this way unless..."

The iceberg creaked again. Cy knew in a moment what had happened. He turned to stare at Barnes wide-eyed, the windclaw no doubt feeling through his own ice magic what Cyclonas was. "The bolts! They're- they're weakening!"

The iceberg gave one last foreboding tremble. And then screams broke the horrified silence as seawater rushed into the iceberg.

"Everybody out!" screamed Althea. "Barnes, get the door open! Now!"

"I'm workin on it, I'm workin on it!" shouted back the wildclaw. The ice over their heads melted away and the blistering wind and snow took its place. There was a stampede as dragons from the lower levels fought their way up through the tunnels. Cy screamed and did his best not to be trampled on.

He climbed up the wall and out of the iceberg and counted off the escaping dragons. Okay, there's Lloyd, and Collium, and Valour and Eris and Nympha and Stark. One by one they crawled out of the hole and joined the others, shivering, on the ice nearby.

"Barnes!" shouted Cyclonas. The wildclaw was still holding open the barrier, even though water had crept up past his knees. "You have gotta get outta there!" He crept to the edge of the hole. "Barnes!"

The wildclaw looked back to the tunnel, which had fallen silent, and then nodded to him. He took a great leap and landed on the ice, claws digging in deep.

"Do we have everyone?" asked Nox. The dark-colored nocturne looked around at the soaked group. "Who are we missing?"

They took a head count. In the end, while most of them had escaped from drowning, not all of them could. Cy stared at the horizon, blinking, trying to make his mind work again.

"What do we do now?" someone asked. Cy made himself turn and noted that it was Jacinthe who'd spoken, one of the younger apprentices. "I mean, the storm isn't so bad right now, but it will be in a couple of minutes."

"We have to find new shelter from the storm," said Lloyd, the other co-leader of the clan. "That's what's most important now."

Cy nodded numbly. Noir was gone. Via was gone. Skyfax and Forge and Cassandra were gone. All gone. Forever. He blinked and his tears froze on his face.

"But where? This is flat land, without wind-blockers, and we don't have the time to burrow again." Collium shuddered. "Not that that would want to go back in an iceberg."

"The kid's right," said Barnes. "There's nowhere here to go."

A thought jumped to Cyclonas's mind. It pushed through his grief and numbness to the forefront of his thoughts and he blurted, "What about those islands that Nympha found?"

"The black rocks?" The coatl in question tilted her head. "Those should be out of the storm's path, I think."

The wind had picked up again. Snow whipped around them, freezing the water dripping from their fur and stealing the breath from their lungs. Cy had to lean in close now to hear what they were saying.

"But that's the Flamecaller's land!" protested Jacinthe. "If we go there, we'll be out from under the Icewarden's protection!"

Nox set his jaw. "We will do what we must to survive."
