______ She has travelled long and far, to reach where she is now. Driven by her desire to know. Only so that she could understand, the whys and whats and hows. It had driven her so far, this thirst for knowledge. Now that she had found the end of this journey, she was uncertain whether she wanted it to end. What path would her life take after this?

Each beat of her heart was in synch with the flapping of her wings. Thump, thump thump, bringing her closer to the looming cave ahead. She should be excited, excited that she was close to the destination of her long, long journey.

But then her life would be without purpose, and she would no longer have something to strive for.

She told herself to forget about it. She would not have her moment of triumph taken from her. She would find her answer, and she wold celebrate, and only then would she think about her future.

She landed at the entrance of the cave, and took her first step unhesitatingly.

PAIN. FEAR. ALONE

She jerked herself back as soon as the flash of panic that held her body still and unresponsive passed away, eyes darting every way. What-? It felt as if she had experienced every bad memory of hers, recent or forgotten, compressed into that one moment. She resented the fear. It made her want to lash out, to scream, to turn away and never come back. She hated that moment of weakness.

But she must continue. And so, with wings pressed firmly to her sides, she entered the cave once more, ignoring the fear-beasts of darkness and memory, until suddenly, her heart was light once more.

WELL DONE.

The tone of the voice caused her to jerk back once more. It was as if the fear that had been in her heart was speaking to her once more, coalescened into one dragon's voice. The dragon.

The guardian emerged from nothing. He was nothing, she understood somehow. He was a guardian, and this was his charge.

YOU COME TO SEEK MY KNOWLEDGE.

She could not nod. It was not a question.

IT IS DARK AND TERRIBLE AND ONCE YOU TAKE IT YOUR DAYS WILL BE FILLED WITH THAT BURDEN. DO YOU STILL SEEK IT?

"Yes." She managed. Of course she sought it! She opened up her mouth to speak, but suddenly found herself sliding away from the dragon. Colors swirled around her, obscuring her view. She could feel it as she slammed into the cavern walls, even though it was a few steps away yet. Then she started falling, and she scrabbled for a clawhold on the ceiling before she realised she was still on the ground, but she was still falling, falling, into the stone.

The assault stopped. She shakily picked herself up from the floor where she had fallen as the guardian looked on disapprovingly.

YOU WILL NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH AGAINST THE ENDLESS CONFUSION. ARE YOU STILL CERTAIN YOU WANT TO KNOW?

She was not certain at all, but she was here already. To give up, even if there were other paths she could take, would mean failure. It would mean humiliation.

"Yes." She murmured.

She reacted slowly, but realised that she should brace herself, if the guardian decided to test herself again.

Days passed by as she stood in that one place. She did not know where the guardian went. Rocks fell, turned to dust, as the scenery around her changed, but still she stood.

Wars were fought around her, phantom soldiers wielding phantom weapons, clawing at each other with a desperate fury, but never noticing her. Peace, not the quiet of a calm day but the dreaded silence of uncertainity. Seasons swept past her, never sparing her a glance, and autumn's leaves fell just as spring's flowers bloomed. Snow pelted her body while the blazing sun melted them at once. She wanted to yell, to make some noise, but she had no voice. Things changed, but she was stuck in time.

In the end, there was only enternity.

When she snapped out of that vision, into time once more, she felt like screaming. Instead, she merely turned frightened eyes onto the guardian, who looked on impassively.

"Wh-what was that...?"

He did not answer.

YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF CARRYING THESE MEMORIES. YOU WILL SUCCUMB TO THEIR MADNESS. ARE YOU CERTAIN YOU STILL WANT TO KNOW?

And she knew the answer was no this time, and she knew that he knew what she would say. She could not continue.

"I. Yield."

And so she fled, without her knowledge.

The guardian only watched.
