Nazgul was born into servitude. Years before he hatched, the Imperial’s parents sold their souls to a powerful demon called Jim who claimed everything that was theirs. The pair’s hatchlings were no exception. Despite the contract that bound Nazgul’s soul, however, the young Imperial was born with eyes that glowed as brightly as the sun. They were the eyes of a Light dragon and they would always see the truth.

From the beginning, Nazgul was immune to deception. He knew when someone was lying to him and developed a penchant for revealing the truth. “If you’re hiding something,” the Imperial would say, “I will find out what it is”. Even the demon who controlled Nazgul had trouble keeping secrets.

Over time, Jim’s frustration with his servant turned to amusement. It became a game in which the demon would concoct elaborate lies just to see how long it would take for the Imperial to figure out the truth. It never took long. Nazgul was also quick to realize that the demon’s game was a distraction to prevent him from prying more deeply into the creature’s secrets. “You’re hiding something from me,” the Imperial remarked one day, “and I will find out what it is.” There was a moment of silence before Jim smiled, “I’m a demon,” he replied, "I’m always hiding something.”

It was after the demon traded Nazgul’s brother for a valuable artifact that the Imperial began to question whether it was possible to escape Jim's control. Among the demon’s belongings, he came across the shattered fragments of a Pearlcatcher’s pearl. He reached out, touching one of the opalescent shards and quickly pulled back after a fragmented memory flickered across his mind. While he couldn’t reconstruct the pearl, Nazgul noticed that each shard contained pieces of memories and if he could put their stories back together, perhaps he could find out the truth.

Nazgul spent months studying the memories contained within the pearl and trying to piece them together into a coherent story. He saw the Pearlcatcher’s life, a humble scholar whose sister’s soul was stolen away by a familiar crimson demon. After nearly a year of painstaking reconstruction, Nazgul finally deciphered the fragmented memories.

“Every demon has a weakness. If you find it, you can defeat them easily. Will you find the demon who stole your sister’s soul then?” a voice questioned. “Yes.” came the Pearlcatcher’s reply. “In fact, I already know his weakness. He draws his powers from the souls that he binds, but we’ve already found that souls can be re-bound, most easily to an object.” The other dragon’s voice spoke again, “and how will you separate them to begin with?” The Pearlcatcher smiled, “that’s the easy part, we just have to summon them at the same time, but in different locations; the soul and the demon will be pulled apart for a short time”.

It was risky. Too risky for Nazgul to attempt on his own. He couldn’t ask the Pearlcatcher for help as his mind had been shattered along with his pearl. Nazgul, however, couldn’t stop thinking about the other voice in the memories. Who had it belonged to? He sought its source, using the fragmented memories to track it back to a mage living amongst a small clan of Arcane dragons. Merlin.

After that, it was easy. The summoning circles glowed brightly, radiating heat as they pulled Nazgul’s soul out of the demon’s clutches and bound it into a small opalescent ring similar to the one that Jim had bound his brother’s soul to before passing him off to a new master. But Nazgul had no new master. He was free. “What will you do now?” Merlin questioned. Nazgul grinned, staring at the ring in his claws.

Since then, Nazgul has made his home amongst the Arcane clan. He works as a scout; one who dragons pay to find the truth when they are faced with secrets and lies. If someone is hiding something, Nazgul always finds out what it is. It never takes him long.
