A fancy number mirror.

This dragon was never really named; he left his birth clan before his parents even had time to think of one. He stopped in the first clan he found, as he was still just a hatching and tired easily. At first he was welcomed by this new clan, but... It didn't take long for them to realize the little mirror was different. He snapped at other hatchlings, lashed out at older dragons, and spent most of his time alone, muttering numbers under his breath.

Soon the clan's hatchlings stopped trying to befriend the stranger, or even be polite. He became the outcast, the oddball, the scapegoat and the butt of all the jokes. He wasn't normal, but no one saw it as a good thing.

A hatchling of the clan was bitten by a barracuda one day, on one of the first fishing trips the youngest of the group were allowed to attend. As the rest of the young dragons discussed the mishap, the odd one out (who was still without a name) decided he would take on the moniker of this fish who was fierce like him: Barracuda.

Having a proper name didn't help him fit in any better, though. They called Barracuda names, and laughed at his retorts. Numbers, he yelled at them. Numbers that defined who they were. Barracuda told them he could tell the order in which dragons were born, just by looking at them. Every dragon has a number, the order in which they were born, even the deities themselves. No one believed that the strange little Mirror could really tell. Of course there was an order, but it was inconceivable that anyone could correctly assign numbers to dragons. They waited for him to mess up, say the same number for two different dragons or forget what another dragon's number was, but he never did.

Barracuda's number is 33221144. He was always proud of it. Other dragons had strings of unrelated numbers. They were unique, sure, but they weren't special. Repeated numbers, numbers in order, palindromes, those numbers stood out. They made a dragon special.

Barracuda stayed in this clan until he was grown. As soon as he was old and strong enough, he left the clan that had ostracized him while he was there. He travelled for some time, finding clans that were never the right fit. Spending so much time running and flying did not make Barracuda strong. It made him weak and tired and angry.

After being forced out of a clan in the Abiding Boneyard, Barracuda chose a direction and flew. He barely stopped to rest until he was over the Frigid Floes. By this point he was exhausted and starving. The cold temperature and lack of sleep left him vulnerable to illness, and he felt the beginning of a fever. Desperate, he half-flew half-fell towards the Floes, looking for anything resembling a clan. What he saw was purple. Barracuda's half asleep brain couldn't process that the purple was a dragon's wings, only that it wasn't ice or frigid water. He fell towards it.

When Barracuda woke up, he simultaneously shivered and wiggled away from the overwhelming heat of the large fire he was facing.

"Make up your mind. Are you cold or hot?"

Barracuda immediately stood up, preparing to fight. Once his eyes adjusted enough to see beyond the fire, he recognized the purple in the wings of the guardian as the color he had seen before losing consciousness. This dragon's number was 6 digits. She was old.

"Who are you?" Barracuda asked with a venomous tone.

The guardian laughed. "Sit down before you black out again."

Barracuda cautiously followed her advice. She held out something that looked sort of like a half-eaten piece of meat. Famished, Barracuda had no trouble obeying when she motioned for him to eat. After she had given him food, it didn't take long for Barracuda to begin spilling his story and his gift to her. Numbers, he explained, were all that he had, and he just wished to find a dragon that agreed.

Surprisingly, the guardian didn't dismiss him as crazy. She offered to help. Barracuda stayed with her for a time. Her rough manners and strong willed personality offended most dragons, but Barracuda loved her. He thought she loved him, too. After all, why else would she stay with him? He wasn't easy to get along with.

Eventually, Barracuda told this guardian of his feelings. She didn't know what to say. After a moment of fumbling for words, she explained to Barracuda what a charge was. Barracuda was her charge. That was why she had helped him, and why she continued to help him. A wedge was driven between them, Barracuda angry and embarrassed and refusing to admit he still cared for her.

So, in a fit of anger, he left. He travelled alone for a time, before stumbling upon-- who else, but another guardian? Barracuda would have bolted off on sight, if it weren't for the fact that this new dragon was blocking the entrance of the small cave he had taken shelter in.

The first thing Barracuda did was demand that the guardian leave. The second thing Barracuda did was cry out, "I better not be your charge!"

After assuring the Mirror that he wasn't, the unfamiliar dragon said he would leave if the two could share polite introductions first. Barracuda gave his name (though not very politely).

"Named after a fish, huh? What a coincidence..."
