The Wanderer
In the room at the heart of the dam there sits an imperial of wheaten hues. He wears the garb of a sage, golden silk, beads and tassels, followed by gleaming lanterns, his eyes and most of his face covered by a hood. He looks every inch the solemn scholar... But he lounges on the floor like a child and laughs like a hyena, telling long and rather exaggerated stories of all kinds of hijinks, from studies to fights to philosophy to corny jokes. He makes the room lively with his words, dragons of all kinds surrounding him to listen. He must have impeccable hearing since as you approach he whips his head around to face you and smiles widely. His voice is warm and jovial.

Xylase is quite the gregarious dragon. He's very talkative for an imperial, and once he's started one of his long, rambling tales it can be quite hard to get him to stop. He's pretty calm and even-tempered though, so even if you interrupt him he generally won't mind. He can be quite slow and methodical, but his decisions are often based just as much dictated by a whim as his thoughtful analysis of the situation. Because of this he can be a little exasperating to work with, but he knows a great deal about a lot of things, and he does always try to be helpful. He and Intermezzo, surprisingly, get along very well; according to him, they used to be in the same clan, but got separated on their journeys. He insists that it was fate that brought them back together again to the same place and the same clan. She says that it was probably the fact that the sign outside the dam is so big even he couldn't miss it and there's really nowhere else nearby they could have ended up. Xylase came as the clan's dam was starting to become quite frequented by traders and travellers. He arrived one day asking for bed and board for a weary traveller, and, upon being given it, made his gratitude clear with long stories of his journeys. He was, it seemed, a wandering sage, who had travelled from the realm of the light across many places, stopping and staying until fate pulled him on to the road again. Until recently, he had spent a great many years in the domain of the Plaguebringer, learning the philosophies and ways of her children, but fate had tugged at his idle feet once more, and brought him here. Cirrus thought that perhaps it was in fact a boat or his feet that had brought him here, but he was harmless enough, and seemed very content to be put to work around the dam and to help out with the guests. So, he stayed a few days, and a few weeks, and a few months, and then more months after that. He hasn't left yet, and it seems he will continue to stay for a long time... At least, until the fancy strikes him to uproot and move on once again. |
