Banded Ironstone

Driftwood Branch

Intricate Woodsculpt

The morning sun pressed down into the gully, inexorably heating the stones underfoot. Soon it would become too hot to linger in this narrow, high-walled remnant of the winter rains. Still the Wildclaw at the bottom of the gully paced slowly along, fanning her crest to let the still-cool breeze reach her skin, eyes scanning the debris left by the floodwaters. The soft chuckle of the shrunken stream blended with the soft clicking of her arching great-claws against water-smoothed stones.

She bent suddenly to snatch up a broken branch, turning it this way and that. “Perhaps,” she muttered to herself. One talon scraped questioningly at the wood. “Sound,” the dragon muttered again, wrinkling the fine lines around her mouth. Gleaming red eyes flickered as she inspected a complex burl near the base of the branch. Almost absently, she paced across the gully, springing to the top of the little cliff with an economic waft of her wings. Still turning the branch over in her hands, she stepped towards the shade of a large oak.

Beneath the oak, a ruddy boulder opened an eye. “Found it yet?” yawned the big Snapper.

“I believe so.” Finally taking her eyes off of the branch, the Wildclaw gave him a brief bob of her head. With a talon she scored the branch across and held it out. “Cut it here, please.”

The Snapper opened his jaws, waiting patiently while the Wildclaw positioned the branch just so, then closed his jaws carefully around it. Massive muscles bulged in his cheeks until the branch gave with a loud crack.

“Phooey,” the Snapper muttered, spitting out the rest of the branch and eyeing his companion askance. “That all you need?”

“Yes. Thank you,” the Wildclaw replied absently, settling down in a comfortable crouch. She took hold of the chunk of wood with one hand, set a talon of the other against it, and removed a long curl of wood.

The Snapper sighed softly and closed his eyes again. The Wildclaw shot him a brief, perplexed look, then bent to her carving.

Just because I am a warrior no more does not mean I need protecting, she thought irritably, then smoothed her crest and resumed her work. Patience is the Way I follow now. I have had many children, warriors all ... all gone ... except my Daiki. My firstborn. She sighed. I never understood you, or your choices. Someday, I hope to learn how.

Her sharp talons smoothed over the surface of the burl.
